NORESCO’s Joe Singer will be at the IBPSA-USA SimBuild conference in Denver, where he will present, “Reimagining Photovoltaic and Battery Storage Sizing in Energy Codes: Requirements at the Space Function Level.” Co-written with colleagues Eric Shadd, P. E.,, Rahul Athalye and Rob Guglielmetti, the paper demonstrates a new framework which can support prescriptive PV and battery system code development to better track building loads of new designs. The framework uses three modules to (a) optimize PV and battery systems to meet export targets, (b) create a relationship map linking modeled systems to spaces, and (c) proportionally distribute building level PV and battery to modeled spaces.

UAlbany will analyze climate trends, while UConn focuses on outage prediction models to recommend resilient solutions. "This partnership will drive advancements in energy industry reliability amidst climate challenges," highlighted Chris Thorncroft, Director at UAlbany’s Atmospheric Sciences Research Center. Emphasizing the impact on clean energy, Professor Anagnostou Emmanouil from UConn stated, "As we face escalating climate risks, enhancing grid resilience is vital for accelerating clean energy adoption." Battery energy storage systems in ERCOT have experienced an unprecedented summer so far in 2024 - with lower average revenues, increased capacity buildout, and signs of Ancillary Service saturation. A new report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) looks at the technical potential of Grid Enhancing Technologies and suggests levers for stakeholders to accelerate deployment. In "Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Innovative Grid Deployment" the DOE says: "These findings represent an urgent call to action for regulators, utilities and all grid stakeholders to evaluate the opportunity to deploy these types of solutions to improve the reliability and affordability of the grid today." "Liftoff will be achieved when utilities and regulators comprehensively value and integrate advanced solutions as part of core grid investment, planning and operations.
