While acknowledging that AI-based tools have the potential to benefit legal professionals and others that practice before the USPTO, but were sure to emphasize that those benefits come with risks. Benesch Litigation Partner Michael Vatis was quoted in a Bloomberg Law article discussing a recent Massachusetts court ruling on the state’s Wiretap Act. Sponsored genetic testing involves a third party, such as a biopharmaceutical company, covering the costs for a patient to undergo genetic testing. This Law360 article does a great job explaining why DOJ and OIG’s legal theories about sponsored genetic testing are incorrect. Sponsored genetic tests play a critical role in helping patients and families receive accurate and timely diagnoses of their rare disorders. They are not kickbacks. The federal government’s position will make diagnoses for these patients even harder and will discourage companies from sponsoring these important diagnostic tools in the first place. We have the tools to help these patients, and we must do better. New York law firm Sullivan & Cromwell LLP said on May 9 that it has formed a new artificial intelligence practice, as large firms compete to handle clients' growing AI-related legal needs. The 800-lawyer firm said the group would be headed by leaders of its intellectual property and finance practices in Silicon Valley, New York and London. Several other large U.S. law firms have also established dedicated AI practice groups over the past year and a half, hoping to capitalize on a surge in AI-related dealmaking, regulatory, and litigation work. Clifford Chance Adopts US-Style Bonus System for Associates: Clifford Chance has revamped its bonus system for UK associates to align more closely with those offered by US firms, according to The Lawyer . The new system, introduced last month, rewards associates more when they are in higher demand, with bonuses linked to the number of hours billed. This US-style focus on billables marks a departure from the ‘no target-hours culture’ prevalent at many UK firms. Clyde & Co Boosts Revenue by 10%: Clyde & Co has reported strong financial results for the past year, with revenue growing by 10% to £845 million. Profit per equity partner (PEP) increased by 4% to £739,000. The firm attributed its growth to success across various practice areas, emphasizing its "sector-focused, geographically hedged" model. Thank you to the New York Law Journal for publishing the latest column by Chair of Olshan Frome Wolosky LLP’s Intellectual Property Law Group and Co-Chair of the firm’s Brand Management & Protection Group Mary Grieco and associate Morgan Spina! Mary and Morgan write that trademark disputes can be expensive given that a corporate entity is allowed to represent itself, which is not permitted in federal court. They explain that because a Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) proceeding may take several years and entail significant legal fees, the two sides should determine if they can find an alternative to trademark opposition or cancellation. However, both sides must agree to participate in this process, and thus it may be difficult if one party is being obstinate. “By operating as a quasi-litigation, the TTAB affords little room for fast-tracking a trademark dispute or obtaining a final decision expeditiously," Mary and Morgan write. “When faced with having to pay legal fees of its own, the party may become more reasonable.” #OlshanLaw #NewYorkLawJournal #Trademarks #TrademarkDisputes #USPTO #IntellectualPropertyLaw https://lnkd.in/ewpgK7jW
