Is there a difference between a Director of Photography (DP) and a Live Production Camera Operator? I recently caught up with Alexis Wolff to talk about this. As multi-camera Directors, we’ve both worked with DPs and Camera Operators, and Alexis shared a great story from a recent project that highlights the differences between the two. Traditionally, cinema and live broadcast have been mostly separate crafts. But over the last decade, as companies like Blackmagic Design and vMix have made multi-camera production more accessible, more and more filmmakers from the cinema world have been making the shift into live production. The difference? DPs tend to focus on carefully framed, controlled shots. In live production, though, as Directors we often rely on wider, “safety” shots that give us flexibility—buying time when we’re unsure where the conversation will go next. Alexis and I talked about how these conversations are really about balancing the artistic vision with the fast-paced demands of live events. It’s all about making sure everyone understands what’s needed to pull off a show that hits both the creative goals and what the client’s looking for.

No #voiceover post today. Today, it's #roundabouts and #traffic control. There's an intersection near me that's under construction right now. A roundabout is replacing a traditional signaled intersection in the hopes of improving traffic flow, especially during rush hour times. I took this picture of the progress last weekend and it's slated to open this weekend. Personally I'm really looking forward to it. The evening rush hour can be a mess as the signaled intersection could get backed up for ~1.5 miles, taking ~20 minutes to get through. This roundabout should dramatically improve that situation. Roundabouts also have a much lower rate of severe accidents as head-on and "T-bone" collisions are virtually eliminated. And with fewer cars waiting for lights to change colors, we'll all consume a bit less gas and emit a bit less exhaust. I know some people are not fans of roundabouts. Folks in my generation didn't have them when we took driver's ed., so it's learn-on-the-fly, and not all of us learn at the same rate. A roundabout can be intimidating if you don't know what lane to be in, where to look, and who has the right-of-way. So, who else is a fan of roundabouts? Or who hates them? And why?

I have observed a significant gap in the representation of roles within the radio industry. While articles often spotlight on-air personalities, program directors, and executives, there is a notable absence of recognition for Creative Directors, Production Directors, Producers, and Engineers. It raises the question - why are these crucial roles overlooked? During the Covid pandemic, many of us learned how to put out decent video with our cellphones. Just as we need “good light” for our selfies, we also needed it for our videos. What we didn’t have were options to capture good audio that any novice could operate. News still had to be reported, interviews had to be conducted so we accepted whatever audio was audible. Not ideal but it worked for that time. Today, there are so many inexpensive and easy to operate options available. Below I have provided four options for you to review. Here you can look through any questions someone might have about the product, read the reviews and have access to any accessory you might be interest in. So I recently had a prospective client tell me, "I don't think I really NEED voice acting in my video game. It's a top-down isometric dungeon crawler. It's not first person or even really third person and I don't think the camera draw distance of isometric games really lend themselves well to voice work. It only really works in cinematic-style games." ......WHAT?!? https://lnkd.in/e6dzv8hb That's a clip of Diablo IV's phenomenal voice acting. Watch a bit and then mute the video and see how the lack of voice changes the whole mood of the scene. Feel free to replace this clip with your favorite voice acting scenes from Hades, Path of Exile, or even Lost Ark. I'm not saying that you can't make a good game without having voice over, but to say voice acting does not work in isometric games, or ANY style of game for that matter, baffles me. We live in a different world than we did even 10 years ago. Even the simplest of games, down to things like "Coffee Shop Simulator" or "Car Wash Tycoon" are releasing with voice elements. At this point it's pretty much expected. Developers/Future Clients- I challenge you to bring me a gaming project I CAN'T find a way to implement voice art creatively and tastefully into. Seriously. Bring me your deck-builder games with no characters. Bring me the next pong. Bring me whatever weird thing you're working on that you deem "unvoiceable." The fine folks at BLEND Localization and I will make it sing. In fact, if I can't make your game world more atmospheric and alive with voice work then I'll come back to this post, tail between my legs, and announce that I've failed. Woohoo!!!! I've been working on this for more than a year and now the big day is almost here!!! For the last few years, I've wanted to write a book to help journalism students and those new to the profession. I realized that when MMJs and Reporters first start their careers, there rarely is anyone who will help them and give them the kind of feedback they really need. Most times they are left to figure it out, in what is an extremely complicated and pressure-filled job. They are literally out there on their own. It leaves them frustrated, overwhelmed and second-guessing their career. It also leaves stations open to broadcasting mistakes and even lawsuits. So I sat down to write a new age reporters' handbook. Something that may not solve any of these problems, but will at least help give new journalists a REAL WORLD foundation. I tried to incorporate all the things I've learned in more than 30 years into one easy-to-read book that deals with how to be a reporter and mmj. There's not a lot of theory here, but instead, tangible things people can do to excel at storytelling and get along at work. Everything from story meetings, coming up with ideas, gathering elements, interviewing, writing, improving live shots and stand-ups, covering breaking news, anchoring, whether you need an agent, how to get along with your boss and co-workers, and how to land that first job or get that next one with a deep emphasis on STORYTELLING!! If you know me or we've worked together, I could use your help when this book is officially released in a few weeks. Help me get the word out. I've made a lot of mistakes in my career so hopefully others won't have to. I'm proud of the pages within and know they will be a great help to those interested in becoming or those who already are broadcast journalists. We need you more than ever!!
