What is “The Quality Policy” at your company and why should anyone care? A classic QMS compliance mistake is to have your leaders “wordsmith twenty words,” then make posters to plaster everywhere. After all, the AS9100 standard mandates the policy as a certification requisite. 🚀 Balancing Tradition and Innovation in Aerospace Quality 🚀 Recently, my 5-year-old son asked me, "Papa, what do you do at Boeing?" This simple question led to a profound conversation about my role as a Regional Manager managing supplier quality, and it got me thinking about how to explain it in a way that's simple yet meaningful. I told him, "Imagine we Quality Folks are like a superhero for quality at Boeing. Just like superheroes ensure everything is safe and perfect, we make sure all the parts we use to make airplanes are also safe and perfect. It's like assembling a perfect puzzle so airplanes can fly safely in the sky." His curious mind didn't stop there. He asked how come airplanes looker nicer now than the older airplanes and if new airplanes are healthier then old airplanes?.. I paused for a moment and asked him, why are you asking this question.. he then citing his grandpa's view on old farming practices being healthier that current day farming. His question resonated deeply, sparking reflections on the balance between tradition and innovation in aerospace quality. While we celebrate technological advancements in the aerospace industry, my son's question made me pause and reflect: Are these advancements truly enhancing quality? Are defect rates improving? may be- yes! but... long way to go I guess! His perspective reminded me of the importance of going back to basics in Aerospace Quality Management. Just as old farming methods can offer valuable insights, revisiting timeless quality practices may enhance safety and reliability in aerospace. As we embrace innovation, let's not forget the wisdom of the past. Words Of Affirmation (and Appreciation) Like many of you can relate, unemployment due to the financial health of the organization for which you work can be very difficult to endure - especially having done so twice with two different organizations within an (18) month period. Yet, when we do land on our feet, it can be a sweeter experience than had we NOT suffered in the first place. I count it a blessing to have been working with Tech Castings LLC for the past 3-1/2 years, and this past week was particularly fun for me. We had a sizable project we were all working to get into the end zone and I do feel like we won! The trust the owners have for me, the value they place on my abilities and the fact I'm allowed to pull from nearly every single professional aspect of my several different disciplines from the past... well, it's just plain fun for me. Sure, we have tough days like anyone else, but the resonance I've found with everyone here, the way we all find a way to trust each other and to 'get it done', it makes me tear up a little bit at times from the overwhelming sense of gratitude. I'm not going to call him out by name because I don't want to embarrass him - when he reads this, he'll know. The expertise to engage in complex government contracting is expensive to develop and maintain, and many commercial firms avoid it altogether. Financial analysts often refer to a “moat” as a dynamic that serves to deter new entrants to a given market; U.S. government compliance is a wide, deep, and shark-infested moat behind which defense specialists compete mainly against each other." In short - it's incredibly expensive to play in the defense sandbox.
