DeepCast shipped a number of really cool new features recently in advance of a broad outreach push to podcast listeners. One new feature is our new Daily DeepDigest tool that sends you a concise daily email including any new episodes from the trailing 24 hours from any podcasts you Subscribe to (on DeepCast). Think daily podcast cliff notes or podcast news ticker tape, with a hint of Morning Brew various brews or PitchBook News—it's increasing information throughput when you're pressed for time. And this feature is rapidly evolving to distill other key extractions from shows you're already interested in, but also exposing you to other shows you might be unfamiliar with that also have nuggets to share—and thus increasing your aperture yet still conscious of your time. Want to go deeper on any given episode? Click the episode detail and you're off to an episode on DeepCast, where you can subsequently read a longer form distillation of that episode or go straight to the source and listen to the episode. (And podcaster friends, these pages are definitely increasing indexing and thus Google entry points to your shows!) I'm loving this feature as a user, personally. Great post by Josh Wagner on the importance of urgency. If you don't want to build a company characterized by urgency and extreme intensity over a long period of time - at least a decade - you would be better off not raising venture capital.

I enjoyed going on Nick Telson-Sillett’s podcast, Pitch Deck by Forward Pursuit. Nick is a serial founder and investor (founded and exited DesignMyNight) so knows both sides of the table which always makes for an enriching chat. Some things we discussed: - The perceived power dynamic between VCs and founders can hinder productive conversations. - A compelling product demo can significantly influence investor interest. - Founders must focus on solving real customer problems to succeed. - Hiring standards are crucial for building a successful startup team. - Behavioural roadblocks can prevent the adoption of new solutions. - Validation from potential customers is key for pre-revenue startups. - The early-stage funding landscape has become more efficient and selective. - Pace of execution is a critical factor in attracting investment.

Thrilled to announce my co-founder Diana Ross (who has gone $0-10M ARR as the ONLY rep 2x) has now joined RB2B full time to build our full GTM motion. If you’ve been following the journey, we went $0-$4m ARR in 40 weeks, but we’ve hit a wall for four reasons, all related to spiking churn: 1. Our product is unusable for our ICP (fixing this now) 2. We have tons of competitors who have different (confusing) angles 3. We have been selling leads and demos, which is wrong/doesn’t work 4. We are not telling customers EXACTLY what to do and how to use it Here’s our LIVE SaaS metrics: https://lnkd.in/gTh6_8_S At GetEmails, we hit a wall at month 9 and didn’t break through until month 18. Our churn was actually far worse (which is hard to believe). If you ask Diana what major change happened in month 18, she’d say: “We stopped letting the market decide how to use our product, took complete control over what to do and how to implement, and coached on evaluation.” What was our revenue at GetEmails (now Retention.com) over that period?  Month 9: 200k MRR Month 18: 230k MRR Month 27: 620k MRR This is why I’m excited to bring Diana on board. We think we know exactly what our problem is, and how to solve it. Will we be stuck for 9 months again? Will we break out sooner? Retention.com ended May up 1.1% at $21.7m ARR, but still below our Dec ‘23 high of $22.1m ARR. RB2B closed the month at $622k ARR (+300% m-o-m). Here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly of May 2024: If you’ve been following along from home... We had four down months in a row (Jan - Apr). April was the biggest down month: - 2.3%. The hardest LinkedIn post I ever wrote was that April monthly update: - We were down for the 4th month. - We were down more than prior months. - The market dynamics had changed completely. - We had competition coming from everywhere, big pricing pressure. - Our churn problem seemed to be getting worse, no matter what we did. The hardest part of that entire post was admitting that I had no idea when it would end. It was even harder listening to our execs tell me that the post read horribly from our employees perspective. But here’s what I knew when I posted that post... We were (arguably, still are) just stuck again. My entire journey has been getting stuck, then getting un-stuck again. I knew we would figure out how to move forward again. If we just kept going, we would figure out: - Exactly how to navigate the new competitive environment - How and what we could do that others couldn’t do  - How to improve efficiency and get in front of churn I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet, but we are on the right track. Retention(.)com team - I’m proud of you. Keep it up! We’re going to emerge on the other side much stronger. Retention(.)com Highlights: - We continued the roll-out of EOS - We are ahead of our Q2 sales target - We’re seeing an increase in our expansion revenue - Average deal size is up around 7% this Q - Canceled revenue is down 18% this Q - 375 people are signed up for our 2nd Retox event - We launched a new Reclaim flow - “active onsite”  - We made significant progress on our SFMC Reclaim integration We generated around $600k of free cash, which offsets some of the free cash miss last month (which was around $300k). RB2B Highlights: - $622k ARR 12 weeks post launch, team of 5 (welcome Jeff Hall) - Still only have a 1.3% conversion rate - We’re going to push out a credit system (lower prices) next week - We are experimenting with a two-touch sales motion next week - We have our first full-time salesperson starting July 1 - Human support down from 8.4% to 3.2% of total interactions - We’ve started to see an uptick in UGC - 3 last week, 7 this week All things considered, May was a pretty good month. There aren’t too many negative things to dwell on. Pretty soon we’re going to start including RB2B ARR in the top line ARR number. That, to me, is the life we have chosen. Get stuck. Figure something else out. Grow again. Doing what we do is not easy. But when you find a new growth lever, it’s sooooooooo satisfying. The good news is I’ll keep reporting everything so you can be a part of the journey. Keep building.

Want to build wealth faster? Skip startups. Buy Boring Old Businesses. Here’s why: 1. They’re already making money. 2. They come with customers, systems, and momentum. 3. They’re undervalued – 2.5x profits is standard. 4. SBA loans or seller financing make them accessible. 5. Easy profit boosters: raise prices or add new products. 6. They’re easier to scale than startups. Startups fail 65% of the time within the first 5 years. But "boring" businesses? They’re built to last. Don’t build from scratch. Buy something proven.
