EPA Update: Interim Guidance to Expand Viral Claims to Additional Antimicrobial Products On October 10, 2024, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released interim guidance for adding viral claims to food and non-food contact surface sanitizer antimicrobial products which have met the bacterial efficacy requirements for a sanitizer as outlined in EPA’s Product Performance Guidelines, OCSPP 810.2300. This interim guidance follows the EPA’s draft guidance posted by the EPA on July 17, 2023.   Historically, viral claims were only allowed by the EPA on sterilant and disinfectant products as the EPA felt that viral claims were primarily a concern in hospital and healthcare settings. This study developed apple pomace biochar (ABC) and modified it to enhance soil properties and immobilize cadmium (Cd). The best results were with 13% Mn-P-ABC, reducing extractable Cd by 43.84%, decreasing acid-soluble Cd by 35.57%, and increasing residual Cd by 30.18%.

Bioassays for Monitoring Constituents of Emerging Concern Cell-based reporter assays are a well-established technology that can provide an early warning signal for potential problems due to their sensitive detection of biological effects caused by CECs, their ability to identify effects from non-targeted CECs, and their capability to measure the additive effects of complex mixtures of CECs.
