Exciting to see startups aiming to use AI to discover chemicals, materials, drugs, etc. Semi companies have taken notice: AMD is investing in and Cadence is acquiring them. Semi/EDA companies have broken out by becoming critical path, whether it’s through critical software, packaging, IP, design kits from foundries, or user communities. Aside from just making it easy to make new materials, these “AI for making X” companies also need to articulate a vision as to how they can establish monopolistic positions in their industries.

Arenas, defined by high growth and dynamism, are set to reshape the global economy with 18 potential future arenas projected to generate $29 trillion to $48 trillion in revenues by 2040. From AI to robotics, these arenas could yield $2 trillion to $6 trillion in profit, increasing their collective share of global GDP from 4% to 10-16% by 2040. Twelve current arenas, including e-commerce and biopharma, exhibited remarkable growth from 2005 to 2020, with a revenue CAGR of 10% and market cap CAGR of 16%, tripling their global GDP share to 9%. In contrast, non-arenas only saw a 4% revenue CAGR and 6% market cap CAGR over the same period. The significant differences between current arenas and non-arenas inform the understanding of future arenas, showcasing higher profits, more global giants, and strong opportunities for new entrants. The "arena-creation potion" combines business model changes, escalatory investments, and a large addressable market, fostering competitive escalation and driving innovation and growth in these dynamic sectors.

Since 2016, SpaceX has launched ~300 Falcon 9 rockets into space. Every single one has been successful. The consistency is remarkable, but how did they achieve this across different weather conditions, payloads, and rocket designs? The answer is testing… and lots of it. On the surface, testing hardware is relatively simple. Build it, test it, see what breaks. Rinse and repeat until you have a robust product. This works great in theory, but it’s much harder when software is antiquated and the data volumes are overwhelming. As the number of variables increases, the number of trials needed increases exponentially. Let's do some quick math assuming we want to isolate different numbers of variables… 5 variables → 120 trials 10 variables → 3,628,800 trials 20 variables → 2,432,902,008,176,640,000 trials (2.4 quintillion) You get the idea. For complex hardware (like Falcon 9), it’s incredibly difficult and expensive to test all aspects of a system. Yet there are significant real-world consequences when mission-critical hardware fails. r/PropTech, 2018 someone asked: "Anything new and interesting in prop tech lately?" Didn't get much of a response. I think I can help answer... If I was going to answer this in 2018, I'd say we were seeing a lot of exciting things around residential fintech. Our residential fintech investments have been premised on the fact that there's these inherent inefficiencies, these archaic and anachronistic processes, around buying and selling real estate in the U.S. and all of the ancillary financial products you have to buy. This was of course affected by rising rates and lessened home affordability. I actually think now more than ever is an exciting time in proptech, because difficult times for the real estate industry (and it's been very, very difficult over the past few years) have totally opened up the industry to seeing the value in adopting technology. This adverse environment has totally thrust this imperative to become innovative (which is something the real estate industry has historically not been good at) front and center onto the real estate industry. I think that attitude shift is going to make for a really exciting time, and it's going to lead to some amazing new companies being born, doing everything from the proptech classic of "digitizing pen-and-paper processes to make them more efficient" to building entirely new real estate businesses on the backs of data and technology -- much like we saw Lineage do with cold storage and logistics. #proptech

Want to build wealth faster? Skip startups. Buy Boring Old Businesses. Here’s why: 1. They’re already making money. 2. They come with customers, systems, and momentum. 3. They’re undervalued – 2.5x profits is standard. 4. SBA loans or seller financing make them accessible. 5. Easy profit boosters: raise prices or add new products. 6. They’re easier to scale than startups. Startups fail 65% of the time within the first 5 years. But "boring" businesses? They’re built to last. Don’t build from scratch. Buy something proven. Ever wonder why the best tech doesn't always win in defense? Meeting lots of defense tech founders recently has shown me a hard truth—99.9% of them vastly underestimate defense go-to-market. This isn't a market where the best tech wins by default. Winning in defense requires much more regulatory capture than people realize—-product-led growth (PLG) is essentially non-existent. Traditional tech founders face huge disadvantages when building exclusively for DoD customers. In this field, having cutting-edge technology isn't enough, you need a massively unfair advantage (beyond technology) to succeed here. It's an area where connections, understanding the bureaucracy, and navigating the procurement maze are critical. I don't recommend building for this sector unless you're prepared for these unique challenges.

Remember when the AI Pin from Humane raised $240m and then flopped? Great news, another company, friend, is trying again. This time they raised $2.5m and spent $1.8m on a domain and bizarre video. But their device, who's functionality doesn't make any sense, use case isn't clear at all, and they are deserving of capital because.... ? Part of the reason VCs get made fun of is because they invest in shit like this and then turn around and say "POWER LAW POWER LAW POWER LAW". Betting on innovation of the future does not mean betting on nonsensical ideas. Either VCs are out of touch with the average person or they make stupid decisions with other people's money. Shout out Amy Wu for finding this and Connor Harbison for sending it to me. In the meantime I might try to raise $3.5m for a wallet that tells you to buy more shots at the bar because that's what friends should do. It's called fiend. I'm going to spend all of the money on the domain fiend.ai

Big deal. Great plans. We're in the middle of a #repositioning, which is priority-1 right now. We’re moving away from our current positioning to better resonate with our #academic commitment. Sticking with our old vibe was tough; including restrictions from a few platforms. As AI skeptics are watching, any negative publicity makes us a target, since #AI is still viewed with suspicion. We're expanding our toolset to reach a broader audience and be more helpful to the academic community. We’re not focusing just on students & scientists anymore; we're also stepping into marketing and text creation. The core of what we do is to #reduce the time spent on routine tasks and #focus more on generating better ideas. With the new positioning, we're also on the hunt for funds to accelerate our growth, aim higher, and plan our grand exit in 2025.
