Thanks to the team at The Frictionless Experience for giving me a chance to share some thoughts. This was my first podcast and quite a learning experience. The team there was professional and made the experience run smoothly end-to-end, helped guide me throughout, and waved the magic wand of the editor's paintbrush so that my podcast naivete didn't show through too much in the finished product. I'm constantly humbled by the amazing talent in the analytics and personalization spaces, and I hope our view of the space can provide additional perspective as well that others find helpful. My own personal journey has been one of learning that there is material value in getting as many minds to the table as possible, informing them with elevated data narratives, and finding a real synergy between the expert opinions of our co-workers and the data narrative. Sometimes I think stepping away from discussions on the quality of data, platform, and identity resolution, and instead focusing on building solid narratives from data can perhaps help data and technology follow from narrative and curated experiences, rather than narrative and curated experiences following data and technology. I hope it's helpful to you.

Thanks to changing technology, it feels like the whole industry is struggling with data accuracy/credibility. There's a lot of FUD going around. Myriam puts data discrepancies in context, and gives us hope with all the ways your data is still useful. Plus, Myriam's awesome.

At InVision, we worked with some amazing software vendors. I know I've talked about most of these in the past; but, I just want to give a final shout-out to some of my favorites: * LaunchDarkly - feature flags completely changed the way we approached product development. And, allowed us to all but eliminate our incidents and outages (shameless plug for my own book: https://lnkd.in/ehxiy6bY). * Postmark - delivered all of our outbound emails and powered our inbound reply-by-email workflows with flawless uptime and befuddling performance. * Pusher - powered our real-time collaboration via WebSockets, bringing our UIs to life and keeping browsers synchronized. * Intergral | FusionReactor APM - gave us deep insights into our JVM performance, allowing us to track down SQL, API, and processing bottlenecks. * Datadog - truly world-class metrics, alerting, and monitoring. * Adobe ColdFusion / Lucee CFML - the programming language and application server that allowed us to move fast, keep things simple, respond to users, and build wonderful things. * Cloudflare - your CDN, WAF, and web workers took a beating so that our origin servers could stay online. * Amplitude - connected me to the users by giving us insight into what our users were actually doing (or not doing). At one point, I think we had over 300 different SaaS subscriptions; so this list is faaaaar from exhaustive. And, I'm sure I'm forgetting other beloved services. And, many of our teams worked with entirely different technologies. This is just my little corner of the organization. And, I couldn't have done it without them. Thank you so much! ❤️

I shared Jennifer Pahlka’s first blog post on the subject, but this follow up, and specifically the second half, regarding how not every ‘discovery’ phase is a success - *and that’s OK* - is crucial to everyone to understand: https://lnkd.in/eptnfZ_9 “The first discovery sprint does not necessarily lead to a clear understanding of the need, or sufficient alignment around that understanding. What you do then is stop and assess the situation… It may just be that conditions are not right to move forward for any number of reasons. So you stop. And likely then go again later. But not always.” “That the next stage is NOT inevitable is the entire point…the point of this system is to avoid building the wrong thing, and to invest the right amounts at the right times so that you build the right thing.” Lower the cost of failure. Focus on learning. Don’t invest too much, emotionally or financially, in a particular thing being successful - then you can enjoy it even more if it is.

To all my fellow dev leaders, what's something you've learned through your growth that you didn't realize early on? For me, it's been empathy and simplicity. As a dev leader, you're often asked to provide simple answers to complex problems and give estimates of when they'll be ready. This makes up a significant part of the job. To build trust and clarity, you need to empathize with your clients' needs (both internal and external), fully understand the customer need, and platform or service you're delivering on. This ensures you're delivering value and maintaining trust. I've learned to say "I understand" more than I've uttered "are you crazy?!". When I was a junior developer, I tended to overcomplicate problems to justify my expertise. But as I grew and learned from mentors, I realized most people want to know three things: Can it be fixed? When can it be done? What do I need to do? Like a car repair, they want clear, straightforward answers, not technical jargon. With that, rather than outright reject a new feature or revision simply because I didn't want to fix the problem or undo work I've done — I've learned to see every bit of feedback as an opportunity to enhance features and bring things closer to the customer's expectation — a valuable insight in building great products. In delivering, I'm not always perfect (I've learned to be imperfect) and often rethink my approach, but to me this represents growth and persistence. It's about striving to deliver the best results and meeting expectations. Sometimes we have answers right away, but I find my trust goes further when I thoroughly think through the process, even if it means rethinking within reason to ensure we're meeting every expectation above and beyond. This isn't about inefficiency or indecisiveness; it's about delivering the best possible results. So, what's something you've learned on your journey in dev leadership?
