The Albany Med Health System is currently in negotiations with CDPHP over an alleged lack of reimbursement payments worth more than $40 million as well as coverage for CDPHP members in 2025. Despite longstanding industry claims that nursing homes operate on “razor-thin” margins, reports continue to show significant profit-making overall, with increasingly sophisticated operators tunneling money away from care into upfront profits. An investigation by the New Jersey Office of the State Comptroller (OSC) found that South Jersey Extended Care (SJEC) misused millions in Medicaid funds to enrich its operators while neglecting residents. The facility, consistently given the lowest, one-star rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), was run by Michael Konig and Steven Krausman, who funneled Medicaid payments through businesses they controlled, avoiding scrutiny through fraudulent practices. Between 2018 and 2023, SJEC received $35.6 million in Medicaid funds but paid $38.9 million to related-party businesses owned by Konig and Krausman. The Comptroller found that these entities inflated prices and delivered substandard services, leading to chronic understaffing and dire living conditions for residents, including filthy facilities and delayed medical care. This week is the third and final part of our "Capitalizing on the Cardiology Boom" series! Dr. Joseph Puma is the founder of Sorin Medical, P.C. and the founder and president of the New York Ambulatory Cardiovascular Society. As New York does not currently allow CV procedures to take place in an ambulatory setting, Dr. Puma is working with many organizations to change this. We had the chance to ask Dr. Puma about the most common concerns he hears from both surgery center leaders and governing bodies.  🦺 Safety Concerns: There's a common perception that cardiovascular patients are higher risk and higher acuity, leading to fears of complications. However, with 20 years of data demonstrating the safety of outpatient stent procedures, ASCs have clear criteria to ensure patient safety. 💰 Economic Impact on Hospitals: States like New York worry about the financial impact on hospitals if cardiac procedures move to ASCs. While this concern is valid, the shift is driven by the need to reduce healthcare costs and increase access to care.  💼 Union and Employment Issues: Both the nursing unions and hospital associations resist the shift due to economic concerns. However, Dr. Puma counters that increasing access to care and lowering costs are aligned with the stated goals of politicians and healthcare leaders, so that needs to be the driver. 🖥️ Technology Advancements: Smaller catheter sizes, radial artery access, and extensive intra-arterial monitoring have made these procedures safe and effective in an outpatient setting. 🏆 Proven Success: With 80% of the million annual PCI procedures potentially suitable for ASCs and states progressively allowing these procedures, the future looks promising. Penn Medicine partners with Mark Cuban's drug company “To reduce medication costs and mitigate drug shortages, Penn Medicine is uniting with Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co., the health system said Dec. 6. The Philadelphia-based organization will buy the 100 most frequently dispensed medicines through the company's Cost Plus Marketplace for its retail pharmacy network. Penn Medicine's 16 retail pharmacies fill more than 1.5 million prescriptions every year. This marks the third health system to announce a partnership with Cost Plus Drugs. Louisville, Ky.-based ScionHealth and Penn Medicine have agreed to buy medications in bulk from the company's marketplace. Community Health Systems in Franklin, Tenn., is leveraging its partnership by buying therapies manufactured by Cost Plus Drugs and utilizing its wholesale drug distributor service.
