The FireHydrant acquisition of Blameless signals a major shift in observability and incident management. My Partner Jaya and I just wrote about the looming "observability crisis"—how the explosion of data and tools has paradoxically made it harder to extract meaningful insights. This deal is a direct response to that crisis. By combining forces, FireHydrant and Blameless aim to build an end-to-end incident management platform to reimagine root cause analysis from the ground up. But to *truly* address the observability crisis, it will take more than consolidation. We need AI-driven systems that: → Provide natural language interfaces to query complex systems → Automatically generate and update incident response playbooks → Offer predictive maintenance by recognizing patterns across heterogeneous data sources → Synthesize post-mortem reports, distilling insights from terabytes of data Most critically, we need to ditch volume-based pricing models that incentivize data hoarding over problem-solving. Expect more moves as the market evolves to meet the demands of increasingly complex enterprise systems.

In late 2023 we reported that MySQL and MariaDB’s REPEATABLE READ did not, in fact, provide repeatable reads. The MariaDB team has been hard at work this past year. They’ve added a new flag, --innodb-snapshot-isolation=true, which causes REPEATABLE READ to prevent Lost Update, Non-repeatable Read, and violations of Monotonic Atomic View. This was a great keynote by Kelsey Hightower at the LF open source summit a few weeks back. Two things came to mind: If all maintainers were as open minded about the community and forks, we'd have far less energy wasted in drama and duplication. If regulators / policy makers understood the intersection better between a maintainer creating something useful -for them- and commercial entities leveraging said capabilities, we'd save a lot of effort battling bad policy. Security practitioners are wasting their time securing themselves from AI attacks. Here’s why 👇 Too many are focused on defending against AI when they don’t even have their security fundamentals in place. AI-enhanced attacks are ‘stronger’ because AI increases the breath and depth of ordinary attacks. Attackers can target more victims quickly, and with multiple kinds of attacks. However this doesn’t change the way we defend against attacks because they are mostly still the same, just amplified. For example, an AI deepfake is just a social engineering threat which we’ve seen before. The best way to defend against these is get back to basics. Tune those fundamentals. For example, get your access control, network policies, exposed endpoints, and monitoring fixed before worrying about AI-enhanced attacks. The basics are more important than ever.
