Amazon Web Services (AWS) is at war and Andy Jassy has a new consigliere Matt Garman. Amazon.com Inc. has strategically positioned Matt Garman as the new CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), much like a wartime consigliere in the vein of the iconic film "The Godfather." Garman assumes command in a critical era for AWS, marked by intense competition for cloud and AI supremacy. This period follows significant shifts brought about by the pandemic, a new wave of developers, and rapid advancements in generative AI technology. AWS finds itself in the midst of a fierce battleground, not only maintaining its cloud infrastructure leadership but also vying for dominance in the burgeoning AI sector. The one other wildcard in favor of AWS with Garman (besides being a product czar) is that he's very partner friendly which will be a key part of keeping AWS ahead. Data marts, warehouses, lakes, whatever the name, the pattern of consolidating data across an enterprise for comprehensive analytics is a familiar one. Every enterprise has many data sources, some operational, some analytics, some telemetry, and bringing them together has always been a challenge. Cleaning the data, curating for consistency, exploring, doing data science, building reports, monitoring, is another series of challenges in bringing a range of tools to bear on the data, thanks to diverse data formats and tooling. With Gen AI, the requirements (e.g., vector indexing for RAG) and potential value of the data have both gone up. And the pressure to ensure right use of the data, to comply to a broad range of regulations, to secure the data has never been higher. We believe the time has come to come together around open data standards to ensure that data is easy to consolidate and easy to plug into a wide variety of tools, all in a properly governed way. Josh and I describe the approach we are taking at Microsoft with Fabric and Purview. We are building on open Parquet-based updatable table formats such as Delta, Iceberg and Hudi, and interop across them with XTable. We are making it easy to consolidate data with mechanisms like mirroring and shortcuts. Ultimately, users should be able to use their tool of choice for a given task with the least friction.

Here’s a couple of key highlights: NetApp CEO, George Kurian, revealed the secret recipe behind Intelligent Data Infrastructure…we’re talking block storage, AI, and cloud. We also heard from some of the world’s largest public cloud providers -- Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS) about how we are helping our customers have the choice to manage their data storage – any data, any place, any workload. But my favorite part was hearing from a real-life hero, Monica Jain Director of R&D Data Science at Johnson & Johnson, who shared her awe-inspiring journey of using data analytics and AI to save lives. 1 day down, 2 to go. "It used to take 8 to 12 weeks to get a report from request to production. With Incorta, business users can do that on their own, instantaneously” (Ajit Oak, Head of Business Intelligence at Broadcom). Here was Broadcom's challenge: data stored across multiple complex business systems made it difficult to analyze fast enough. The team relied on disparate software solutions, including Workday, Oracle ERP, Model N, Oracle Demantra, and Microsoft Excel. Despite investments in a traditional data warehouse and multiple data marts, generating a new analytical dashboard or report took 6-12 weeks. The delay between business requests and production was a critical pain point. Alan Davidson, Chief Information Officer at Broadcom, explained, “Our employees can’t wait weeks for the information they need to do their jobs. But at the same time, we have billions of rows of data in our database. It’s no small challenge to quickly slice and dice that amount of information.” ➡ Broadcom needed a solution that could: Reduce the time to deliver information to employees. AND Increase department productivity without draining internal resources. Other selection criteria included cost-effectiveness, self-service capability, ease of maintenance, minimal support from other technologies, and easy integration with external applications like Microsoft Excel. This move has significantly enhanced their data processing capabilities, ensuring quicker access to insights and better performance overall. Broadcom (AVGO) shares surged on Thursday as the semiconductor giant announced a 10-for-1 stock split. This strategic decision comes on the heels of a strong second-quarter earnings report, driven by high demand for the company's artificial intelligence products. Amazon Web Services (AWS) rolled out v1.0 of cost data export compliant with FinOps Foundation FOCUS specifications. zOpt.ai is a contributor to #FinOps #FOCUS specifications and I am glad to see the progress and adoption of the standard specifications by all the major cloud providers. This is a major step in understanding cloud spend across cloud providers in uniform manner.
