Can you spot three problems with the clear and grammatically correct sentence below? Here's the relevant context: I'm working on my deck for our next #Storytelling to Increase Your #Impact workshop that starts on Monday (2 spots still available -- link below!) I've delivered the workshop many times before, but just as stories get better the more often you tell them, so do my insights and the slides I share to relay them. I came across the sentence below, plucked from the first draft of a previous participant's shared story. There are three things about it that undermine the power of the story. If my colleague weren't on vacation, or if I'd had more patience, I would have figured out how to connect my Canva account to my Linkedin profile so I could show you the solution! 🪧 Exciting Announcement: Interim Synthesis Report from the Mainstreaming Scaling Initiative! 🪧 I’m thrilled to share the interim synthesis report from the Mainstreaming Scaling Initiative, which I had the honor of providing editorial support for over the past several weeks. 🌟 About the Initiative: The Mainstreaming Scaling Initiative aims to: 1. Assess progress in mainstreaming scaling within funder organizations. 2. Develop and share lessons learned. 3. Encourage and inform further mainstreaming efforts by interested organizations. So far, it has developed 12 insightful case studies and, now, this interim report. 💥 Key message: Authors advocate for a shift from transactional scaling (spending more, doing more) to transformational scaling (achieving long-term, sustainable change that addresses significant portions of global problems). 💯 🔑 Additional recommendations for Funders: 1. Facilitate linkages: Create formal mechanisms and institutions to connect small donors, innovators, innovation funders, larger funders, and long-term service providers. 2. Invest in intermediary functions: Allocate more resources to funds that support intermediary functions within specific sectors or thematic areas. 3. Strengthen regional platforms: Invest in the creation and enhancement of country-led, inclusive country and regional platforms. 4. Integrate scaling into MEAL Frameworks: Incorporate scaling into widely used Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) frameworks, such as the DAC guidelines. 5. #TechWalk is the community I never realized I needed. Over the past month, I've had the incredible opportunity to work alongside the visionary founder of this community, Christine Farrier Rosemin. Adding coaching to #TechWalk has been a transformative experience. Here's what we've been able to cover over this last month. 1️⃣ Connecting Walking to Positive Emotion We often discuss the need for dopamine, but what about oxytocin? Oxytocin, produced through trust and bonding, is essential for deepening personal and professional relationships. 2️⃣ Developing a Mindful Career. With the tech job market facing challenges, we've focused on key aspects of a mindful career: Environment: Reevaluating how your physical and work environment supports your growth. Emotion: Recognizing responsibilities and opportunities that foster a sense of purpose. Experience: Crafting narratives around your experiences to highlight strengths. Expansion: Identifying challenges that encourage professional growth. These elements allow us to make more mindful choices in our careers. 3️⃣ Self-Compassion in Chaotic Times Whether it's new leadership roles or career transitions, the importance of self-compassion cannot be overstated. Instead of succumbing to self-criticism, we've practiced self-compassion meditation. This practice helps: -Extend grace to ourselves and others -Mitigating stress and the fight-or-flight response. In a short time we've slowed down and gained more personal agency as a community. A little bit of practice to integrate personal and professional development Tomorrow, I'll lead a session on taking purposeful action in challenging times. Did you know there are two types of fear? In her work on personal development, Tara Mohr introduces us to two Hebrew words that describe different types of fear: Pachad: The fear of imagined outcomes, often irrational and paralysing. That familiar sense when we think of fear. Yirah: A bubbly kind of excitement. We know this experience or challenge will help us grow, but it still makes us nervous. We are on the edge of our of our comfort zone. Recognising the difference between these two and how they show up for you can be transformative in our personal and professional lives. When we learn to distinguish Pachad from Yirah, we can embrace Yirah when it shows up and use this as strength to fuel those growth opportunities. They can feel similar, especially in our bodies and you can experience both at the same time. Very excited (and a bit nervous if I'm honest!) to tell you about a workshop that I’m hosting in collaboration with Tiimo this week.   Tiimo is a visual planning app structured specifically for those of us with neurodivergent minds so I’m especially excited to be teaming up with them (or Tii-ming up, perhaps!). So, I’d love to invite you to ‘Redefining Success - finding your way in a non-linear career’ on Thursday, 17th October 2024 at 3pm (BST). In the workshop, we’ll be exploring: - Why switching things up can be great for your mental health ​- How to handle the ups and downs of a non-linear career ​- Tapping into your natural strengths and interests to stay engaged at work ​- Adapting to change and saying yes to new opportunities The workshop will be live and interactive (only as much as you would like it to be - no one will be forced to have their cameras on or share if you don’t want to, and there won’t be any break out rooms), you’ll leave with some resources to help you on your own work journey and you'll have the chance to ask any questions you might have about changing careers. 🌟 Today, I had the privilege of attending the PANDA | The Women Leadership Network Summit, and while I don’t frequent these events often, when Isabelle calls, I’m all in! Your entrepreneurial spirit is a massive inspiration, Isabell—what you and the Panda team have built over the years is truly impressive. 🙌 As one of the few men at the summit, I found myself in many sessions as the only guy, which did not strike me as awkward. What was surprising, however, was to see how many women approached me, expressing a mix of curiosity and respect about my presence. This highlighted a crucial point: it’s not enough to empower and build networks within our peer groups; we need genuinely diverse events where discussions happen across different perspectives. Only then can we truly address the complexities of our challenges. 🤝 Another significant observation was the emphasis on empowerment and enablement throughout the summit. While these concepts are certainly vital, I noticed a concerning absence of discussions around personal agency—the "I." I heard plenty about the importance of empowering women and changing the conditions, but what I missed was a clear call for individual accountability: “I am taking action. I am driving change.” It’s also about showing how to harness that power effectively. 🔑 This brings me to my standout moment: Jeannette Gusko’s keynote. She highlighted that there is no single inevitable future; we create it together. Her insight that the status quo doesn’t need justification while alternatives must be argued was a revelation. From now on, I’ll incorporate this as an imperative in all leadership programs we run at SHIFTSCHOOL: If you don’t want to change, you need to explain why not! 💡 Jeannette's ideas on 21st-century leadership resonate deeply with me: collective decision-making, envisioning relatable futures, creative discourse, and an open mindset toward differing opinions. And, most important of all, transformative leadership also demands personal responsibility to drive change. I learned a lot today, even if these large events can be overwhelming. But hey, it’s the weekend now! 😄
