We live more on a URL than in IRL. We have a duty as a digital citizen. On a recent podcast, Manoj Deshpande Neha Deshpande and I discussed digital civics - the rights and duties of a digital citizen, with a strong focus on good behavior and responsibilities. That discussion was all about extracting good civic behaviors from everyday life like being good to your neighbors, keeping your vicinity clean, showing respect, etc., and drawing a parallel to behavior on the internet. But the nature of the internet itself requires a new framework that looks at all the nuances of chatting and sharing, gaming, phone use, scams, misinformation, etc. To address that, I've extended a new psychological framework loosely based on original work done by Estelle Clements https://lnkd.in/dSx2qUzu

In a recently published article on The Register, Mark Pesce. shares a very interesting perspective on the use of co-pilots to generate code and is any of that code copyrightable? Tidbits from the post.. I prompted GPT-4 to modify the function to reflect my deeper understanding; it generated a new version of the function. I pasted that into my code, then added single-line additions, tuning it to my specific needs. I got it to a point where around 80 percent of the output was AI generated, and 20 percent was my own work. That's when I had my third and biggest 'aha': Whose code is this? In the age of AI, one thing the legal system has so far been unambiguously clear on revolves around the ownership of AI generated content: as it has not been created by a human being, it cannot be copyrighted. The AI doesn't own it, the AI's creators don't own it, and whoever prompted the AI to generate this content doesn't own it either. That code cannot have an owner. A core function in code is largely AI-generated; and while the rest of my code may be artisanal, bespoke, human-crafted Python, any coder working with an IDE hooked into Github Copilot or getting help from GPT-4 will likely create code containing so many AI-written tidbits that it's very hard to know where the human ends and the machine begins. Is any of that code copyrightable? Or is all the software we're writing today so thoroughly compromised it might no longer be defensible as a work protected by copyright? Despite high confidence in AI capabilities, UK tech executives acknowledge significant adoption barriers, as revealed by Zartis research. Although 85% rate their workforce’s AI skills as ‘skilled’ and over half as ‘highly skilled,’ challenges like budget restrictions (41%), talent shortage (38%), and technical complexity (35%) hinder full AI integration. AI adoption is nearly universal, with 94% of companies using some form of AI and industry pressure driving investment. However, concerns about integration (44%), ROI uncertainty (42%), and data privacy (38%) persist. Substantial investments are being made, particularly in software development (59%), despite these challenges. The study highlights the need for a well-curated implementation plan and increased government oversight, with executives anticipating benefits from regulations such as the EU AI Act.

Finding the Path: Trusting the Journey Over the Mountain "Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley." There was once a traveler who came across a towering mountain. The peak was hidden behind clouds, and the path to the top was nowhere in sight. Determined to reach the summit, he asked a local villager, “How do I get to the top when I cannot see the way?” The villager smiled and replied, “You cannot see the path from the valley, but it is there. Start walking, and the way will reveal itself step by step.” Taking this advice, the traveler began his ascent. The climb was steep, and there were moments of doubt. Sometimes the path seemed to vanish, forcing him to trust his instincts and move forward cautiously. As he climbed higher, the clouds began to part, and the once-hidden path became clear. Finally, he reached the summit and looked back at the valley, realizing that the journey had shaped his strength and resilience. This story is a reminder that life’s challenges often feel like towering mountains. From the valley, the way forward may seem impossible. However, with faith, persistence, and courage, the path unfolds one step at a time. Trust the journey and believe that every challenge has a solution waiting to be discovered. Do not let the fear of the unknown hold you back. Take the first step, even if the destination seems far. Each step you take brings you closer to the summit, and the view from the top will be worth it. 💡An insightful article by Andrew Harmel Law, Technology Principal at ThoughtWorks. He describes in detail about "Advice Process" that helps software architecture decision-making at scale by encouraging a series of conversations. It gains a lot of importance when organizations grow and multiple autonomous teams working in order to achieve a shared goal. Sooner it becomes imperative that these teams need to make architecture decisions at scale! Through dozens of AI implementations and hundreds of conversations about Enterprise AI - these questions are the most critical to answer. And the most common!
