We work for ROTI—an Indian bread. But understanding R.O.T.I., is a whole other recipe. Back in my GE Capital days, one of my former bosses highlighted a recurring problem. Our vendor partners, crucial to our success, were getting frustrated with how long it took to clear payments—anywhere between 60 to 180 days. This wasn't just a headache for them; it also scared off some top-notch vendors who didn't like the sound of that delay. Like a true blue enthu-cutlet, I dove headfirst into solving this. With a dash of process reengineering and a sprinkle of technology, I managed to whip up a solution that cut the billing turnaround time to just under 15 days from issuing an invoice. I was quite chuffed with myself and even got a pat on the back for it. Then, Deepak Maheshwari stepped in, switching from CFO to Business Lead. In one of his first meetings, I boasted about slicing down the average billing time from a snail-paced 119 days to a speedy 15 days. Whatever he would have said nicely, I am sure my brain just heard a single word - "Idiot". He explained (not in as many words) that my efforts were as commendable as shoving a water-hose in the mouth of a drowning man. Paying out in 15 days instead of the agreed 60 was actually tossing money out the window because we lost what's known as 'float balance'. He taught me a priceless lesson about the Time Value of Money—a lesson that's stuck with me for over a decade and a half. Fast forward to 2012, after leaving GE Capital, I started my own consulting gig. One of my first projects was a pro bono diagnostic for an SBU of a large telecom provider in Delhi. I put together a complete strategic framework and they liked it—until we hit price talks. They wanted a steep newbie discount, but I walked away, knowing the worth of my work. Jump to April 2024, and what do you know? A new team from the same SBU, now under their parent company, came knocking with the exact same problem. History repeating itself! I shared my previous encounter and even threw in another free diagnostic, but yet again, they balked at the price, hoping for a bargain. I tried passing on the wisdom Deepak Maheshwari gave me back in 2009, but maybe I needed his (now gone) moustache to make the point stick. They still didn’t grasp the time value of money. Now, as I ponder waiting another 12 years for them to circle back, I'm left wondering how to make the importance of R.O.T.I.—Return On Time Invested—crystal clear. Maybe it’s time to bake some actual roti and see if that helps drive the message home!

Frontier Mindset in the USA vs. The "Kiss-Ass" Godfather Model in Modern India. 💡💡 Why are Indians overrepresented in leadership positions, unlike East Asians? Why do we excel at managing but struggle to build? 💡💡 Friends, I often criticize India because I want our nation, the cradle of civilization and the crossroads of humanity, to reclaim its rightful place as the true GOAT Vishwaguru. But it’s impossible to be one without being original, disruptive, creative, and building iconic ventures and discovering new frontiers. Today, we live in a Western era, where virtually everything of note in the modern world is the direct result of their research, innovation, and ventures. What makes the USA the greatest experiment ever is (a) the frontier spirit of its people and (b) the disproportionate rewards given to disruptors, regardless of race or creed. No other nation celebrates disruption and constant renewal of its top soil like the US. Unfortunately, this mindset contrasts sharply with the Indian approach, where many rise through the ranks via extreme networking, i.e. the Godfather model, which has long been the *****only viable path to upward mobility in a deeply colonized society*****. I love Sriram Krishnan and celebrate the achievements of every Indian, but this is precisely why Indians are receiving so much hate on Twitter today. We are overrepresented in leadership positions, unlike East Asians (check the PNAS paper in comments), because we excel at understanding human nature and can network, find mentors or gurus, and "kiss ass" to get ahead. The Gharana (or fiefdom) system, a form of patronage, is common across many cultures. While I don’t entirely oppose this model, we must also focus on producing something truly disruptive. I see this same issue in Indic academia. Indian scientists often complain that you can’t rise through the ranks without a Godfather. Whether or not this is true, we need to move past this model. Sure, networking and being deferential to authority are important, but at some point, we must also produce disruptive work. You can’t become a CEO or a leader simply by wordcelling. Middle management may run the world, but India cannot move ahead by being the BACK OFFICE. ➡️ 💡 Our students must aim to perform bold experiments, work on disruptive ideas, and shake the world, and not just complete a BTech+MBA and join a GCC. The world respects and remembers original thinkers, doers, builders, and inventors—not middle managers or caretaker CEOs. Right now, every $ counts, and we may need to "kiss ass" to rise through the ranks. But at some point, we must follow the US model of celebrating dissent, disruption, and innovation; and create iconic ventures and make new discoveries, worthy of a Vishwaguru.

On their Q124 earnings call, Sarepta noted that they anticipated a draft Elevidys label imminently. They have since entered a quiet period. Does this mean an FDA decision is coming ahead of the official June 21 action date for Elevidys? Recall, Sarepta received accelerated approval for Elevidys close to a year ago (June 2023), but has asked FDA for full approval and a label expansion based, in part, on data from EMBARK as well as ENVISION, a study conducted in older, non-ambulatory patients with Duchenne. Three label variables are at play, making for a combination lock of potential outcomes when FDA makes its announcement: 1. The current accelerated label is for walking Duchenne patients (ambulatory) but Sarepta also wants approval in patients who are no longer walking. 2. The current accelerated approval label covers patients ages 4-5 only, whereas Sarepta wants approval without age restrictions. 3. Regardless of age or ambulatory status, Sarepta also wants conversion to a full approval for all Duchenne populations. Sarepta isn’t shy about asking for approval where they do not have clear data. This means whatever decision FDA makes, it’s likely to be mosaic and not binary. Daniel Goleman was in on the first wave of research into the effects of meditation, having made a visit to India and having met some impressive yogis before returning to Harvard. Goleman has been ahead of the curve for a long time. This earlier parts of this book, he points out, first appeared at a time when the links between traditional Asian systems of mental training and modern psychological science were few and far between. They are of course far more common now, with an explosion of research having taken place over the last two decades in particular. To take account of at least some of these developments, new material has been added, detailing some of the history of the encounter between meditation, on the one hand, and science and psychotherapeutic traditions on the other. As we have stepped into the 78th year of independence from colonial rule, I would like to re-emphasize our democratic rights. In my perspective, modern Indian history is a diverse story of political struggles, economic development, and social transformation. Back in the 1960s, our country faced a period of political chaos, and there were signs of major protests. This movement is an effect of emergency which suspended the fundamental rights guaranteed in Part III of the Constitution deal: Right to equality, including equality before law, prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth, and equality of opportunity in matters of employment. The emergence movement was primarily driven by the growing arbitrariness within the states and provoked civil society. Following this emergence movement, two active Delhi-based groups began advocating for the rights of the vulnerable and impoverished members of society through the judicial system. This movement has greatly evolved through the permissible cultural contours of developmental politics within the liberal framework of democracy till date. Similarly, today we find ourselves in the same scenario, with the entire country rallying to free people from sexual assault and criminality. Here, I recall the Kerala government's initiative from early this year. To prevent attacks or violence on hospitals and health care workers, the Kerala government passed a revised version of the Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2012, with stringent provisions for punishment in the event of any violence inside hospitals. As a result, the #Codegrey protocol was implemented to enhance health professionals' morale and allow them to operate with greater confidence and security. I hope it's put into effect nationally to stop workplace violence in the future.
