“Anjali is a quick learner with a true love for writing and reporting. When she took on writing assignments for me, she approached them seriously, looking for ways of improving along the way. Not only did I find her very receptive to critique, but I also noticed that she took these notes to heart and applied them to future stories. Anjali also has an excellent sense of what might make a good story, and a core of logic running through her that makes her writing both accessible and believable. I was especially proud of two perspective pieces she wrote for UMBC Magazine. The first was a response to the Capital Gazette shootings. In it, she recounted a long string of public violence she has witnessed in her short years, and why it all makes her all the more devoted to journalism. The second was a personal story of how she finally, as a young woman, has become comfortable correcting people when they mispronounce her name. It's well written, timely, and brave. I know she has a great future ahead of her!”

The Persistence of Indigenous Unfreedom in Early American Newspaper Advertisements, 1704–1804
Slavery & Abolition
The scholarship on early American slavery has not always fully acknowledged the persistent presence of enslaved and unfree Indigenous men, women, and children in the American colonies and (later) states. This paper aims to contribute to the broader conversation on the nature of American slavery by examining the presence of enslaved Native people and servants in the eighteenth century through the lens of 1,066 advertisements related to Indigenous people between 1704 and 1804 in colonial…
The scholarship on early American slavery has not always fully acknowledged the persistent presence of enslaved and unfree Indigenous men, women, and children in the American colonies and (later) states. This paper aims to contribute to the broader conversation on the nature of American slavery by examining the presence of enslaved Native people and servants in the eighteenth century through the lens of 1,066 advertisements related to Indigenous people between 1704 and 1804 in colonial newspaper ‘runaway slave’ / self-emancipated and ‘to be sold’ advertisements, all drawn from the America’s Historical Newspapers database. A close examination of these advertisements reveals not only a surprisingly robust ongoing presence, but also important trends in terms of sex, racialization and race-designations by colonists, and varieties of slavery, servitude, and unfreedom, as well as the role of early newspapers in supporting and profiting from the business of slavery, including turning citizens into slave patrollers.
