Optimization or transformation? This is THE question for every major enterprise in 2025. Latest wave of AI-driven creative destruction suggests that optimization is unlikely to work. In 2015, economist Mark Perry posted analysis of the impact of the third and fourth industrial revolutions on Fortune 500. "Comparing the 1955 Fortune 500 companies to the 2015 Fortune 500, there are only 61 companies that appear in both lists. In other words, only 12.2% of the Fortune 500 companies in 1955 were still on the list 60 years later in 2015, and nearly 88% of the companies from 1955 have either gone bankrupt, merged with (or were acquired by) another firm, or they still exist but have fallen from the top Fortune 500 companies (ranked by total revenues). Most of the companies on the list in 1955 are unrecognizable, forgotten companies today (e.g. Armstrong Rubber, Cone Mills, Hines Lumber, Pacific Vegetable Oil, and Riegel Textile)." He posited that most of these changes were driven by changes in emerging technologies and failure to adapt. I would add, that in some cases, these companies lacked transformative leadership and in others, their path for adaptation was characterized by "less risky" optimization rather than necessary true transformation. As a professor at Boston University Metropolitan College, our graduate students are encouraged to use #AI to augment their learning and #analytical_processes. But I often convey to them that as many extol AI for its potential to revolutionize education by personalizing learning, we need to be aware of the #bias generated by AI, which is also on the rise. My research experience (https://lnkd.in/eeAraJ_N) has demonstrated several instances where biased #AI_algorithms can perpetuate #inequalities, affecting student outcomes and reinforcing #societal_biases. Addressing these biases is a complex task. Some of the #policy_recommendations I and my colleagues make point to #ethical_standards, varied data sets, and, importantly, thorough testing, demonstrating a commitment to quality and fairness.
