    I assisted in organizing, participating and at times translating in meetings and forums with NGO's of Armenia, government officials and the media to discuss this unique word; volunteer. What I came to learn is that the spirit of helping a neighbor is very strong in Armenia, possibly stronger than in the U.S., but volunteering for the sake of volunteering was not understood.

    It was interesting trying to explain why volunteerism is important, especially for a developing country…

What I came to learn is that the spirit of helping a neighbor is very strong in Armenia, possibly stronger than in the U.S., but volunteering for the sake of volunteering was not understood.

    It was interesting trying to explain why volunteerism is important, especially for a developing country, especially as a volunteer myself. In researching volunteerism in Armenia at the UN, I came to understand that the concept was still very new and foreign.

    The younger generation is changing the mindset, especially because they are able to travel to other countries to study and are interacting with so many new and exciting people through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

    This experience was intellectually stimulating. I had the opportunity to research Armenian policies on various issues and compare them with policies in other post-Soviet countries. My task was to also research on Armenians in Central and South America, specifically Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
