    The Data Science for Social Good Fellowship, started by the University of Chicago and the Schmidt Family Foundation, is a summer program for aspiring data scientists to work on data mining, machine learning, big data and data science projects with social impact. In 2014 the program plans to expand its footprint to Atlanta, New York and San Francisco. Working closely with governments and nonprofits, Fellows take on real-world problems in education, health, energy, transportation, sustainability and more. For three months, Fellows apply their coding and analytics skills, collaborate in a fast-paced atmosphere, and learn from mentors coming from industry, academia and government.

During the event, scheduled for Oct 5-6, 2013, participants will work on real CF issues in three tracks: product, software and data science innovations. The data science track is a unique opportunity to demonstrate the viability of crowd-sourced, social good analytics for clinical research. The data science track is a unique opportunity to demonstrate the viability of crowd-sourced, social good analytics for clinical research. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation & Emory have granted special access to de-identified patient records. These are multi-year data collected longitudinally from more than 800 patients. Attributes include labs, diagnoses, functional metrics, demographics and more. Over 40 data science and analytics professionals have committed to working on this data set to do descriptive statistics, visualization, predictive analytics and more.
