First impressions from an industrial designer exploring Prome AI yesterday and today... There has been a ton of tools in the ai space offering extremely specialized value (text to image generation, creating iterations from a sample, sketch to render, etc) but this is one of the first I've found that offers a full suite of tools in one place, allowing for more flexible workflows (adobe and krea get honorable mentions for moving in this direction). With one subscription, you can generate, edit, create variations, upscale, swap backgrounds, relight, and more. Check out the sidebar of tools in the image attached. I've tried a TON of these tools and I'll admit my monthly spend on software has exploded over the last month. This is an ecosystem where you can pay $30+/mo for each specialized toolset, and I find myself adding subscriptions more than consolidating them. As far as output quality goes, I would say most features in Prome AI are at about the 80% mark of the best results I've found for specialized tools. Midjourney is better at image generation, magnific is better at upscaling, Viacom may be better at sketch2render... But this is a comprehensive space where you can do everything, and the sum is greater than its parts. Far from perfect but this is where I would like to see these creative tools move to. When tactile printing goes wrong…. The paper is heat sensitive which means there are multiple ways to fail. In the laser printer when laying down the basic images. Too cool and ink smears across paper. Too hot and paper begins to react and raise up. In the ZyChem swell printer when raising up images (anything black rises up). Too cool and nothing happens. Too hot and large blocks of diagram rise up while Braille remains too low.

This week, I designed something for a 3D printer. Sounds normal? Here’s the twist—I volunteer as a designer for this meditation center, helping them regularly. Oh, and I only work in 2D. They wanted a custom keyholder for 3D printing. I had no clue how to prep a 3D model for print. But I improvised. Here’s what I did: → Designed the flat shape in Adobe Illustrator. → Exported it as an SVG. → Googled a free tool to convert SVGs into STL (the file type used for 3D printing). → Used the tool to extrude the design into a 3D form. → Sent the STL file to the 3D printer guy. The result? A functional, printed keyholder—and a reminder that every challenge is a chance to grow. Volunteering always pushes me outside my comfort zone. Grinding on.

You think you know what customers want, but you can’t be sure until they try it. That's where prototypes come in💡 When you show an early prototype to users, you get "the secrets of the future" as Mike Maples Jr. says. For product creators, these raw, unfiltered reactions are gold. So don't wait until you have a finished product, or polished screens. Put your ideas in front of real users as early as possible. That'll help you build what your customers truly want. #prototypes #earlyusers

The BioAI Mycelium from my Bio-Logic Series (2022-2023) redefines material design by merging natural intelligence, artificial intelligence, and computational design, exploring how AI can optimize the growth of environmentally friendly materials like mycelium into functional insulators, creating biomaterials optimized for sustainability and environmental impact. This work reflects my commitment to combining AI and natural systems to contribute to a more sustainable future. With a focus on how AI can assist in designing and growing biomaterials, I’ve been exploring the intersection of mycelium x AI biodesign to discover how AI can support the identification and development of diverse bio-engineered and bio-inspired structures. This includes refining the properties of biomaterials for greater functionality and sustainable applications, demonstrating how technology and nature can intersect to provide innovative and sustainable solutions. The foundation for this work was laid almost 20 years ago, in 2006, when I worked as a designer for Ford Motor Company . It's incredibly important to recognize that ID is a field almost as male dominated as engineering is and it's even more important to learn about the steps we can take to make the filed more equitable Top 3 facts that stood out to me: 1. 51% of ID grads are women, but women only make up 28% of Industrial Designers     2. The percentage of women in ID has decreased from 30.77% in 2010 to 18.6% in 2021     3. In 2014, Tandem worked with #RufusLabs designing this oversized wrist wearing communication device. It might seem insignificant today, but for its time, it was one of the very early ones out there. Personally, I wish the product size could be 40% smaller yet still support 16:9 aspect ratio. This allows people of various sizes wear it with ease and glance at important information on the go. Pecha Kucha is a unique presentation style that originated in Tokyo, Japan, in 2003. The term "Pecha Kucha" is Japanese for "chit-chat" or "blah-blah." since 2007 it has been one of the first cities in the Midwest - it now has grown to over 1300 cities in the world, some are on their second and third generation of organizers. It's a bottom up movement that allows people to share their passion, ideas, experiences with their community. It was devised by architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture as a way to facilitate concise and dynamic presentations. The format of a Pecha Kucha presentation is simple yet effective: each presenter shows 20 slides, each for 20 seconds, resulting in a total presentation time of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. One image per slide - no text! The slides advance automatically, allowing presenters to synchronize their speech with the visuals. This format encourages presenters to distill their message into its most essential components, focusing on clarity and brevity. It also keeps the audience engaged and prevents presentations from dragging on, as presenters must convey their ideas within a limited timeframe. Pecha Kucha events have gained popularity worldwide and are commonly used in various fields, including business, design, technology, and the arts, as a format for sharing ideas, showcasing projects, and fostering creativity and collaboration. Here's a good post from Hector Rodriguez. This isn't a straightforward matter. Companies, design managers, & talent recruiters are all over the place with their attitudes re Ai & design. 😵 Here's what I can add from discussions with all of the above. 1. Keep in mind that some people & companies find Ai skills to be intimidating and/or troublesome right now. Folks are simply overwhelmed, and trying to think about how to integrate Ai into their teams & workflow is just a bridge too far. It's a tough economy and people are protective about their jobs, too. 2. Also remember that a significant amount of folks aren't going to understand how you're doing what you're doing. Do your show & tell using your output as the vehicle for describing what you did with Ai. Always try to present your skills with context. Really, really helps. 3. Think about how much you want Ai to be a part of your career. Are you a designer with some Ai skills? Or are you an Ai design specialist? How do you want to be perceived? 4. Light touch at this time. Try to stay out of the weeds. (Take it from me. I'm in the weeds waayyyyy too much.) And always be prepared to have an explanation for *why* you used Ai tools.

Completing a degree in product design highlighted the importance of considering the senses in the development of any idea. The weight of a device or the haptic feedback of a button can make or break an emotional connection with a product. The same principles apply to anyone aiming to create environments that resonate emotionally. This became especially relevant during my work with Co-operative Funeralcare, where we redefined the experience of funeral planning—an emotionally charged journey that required sensitive, empathetic management of the senses. By designing with a focus on how the senses function both independently and interdependently, we can not only celebrate life’s positive moments but also navigate the more difficult ones. The attached article shares some of my thoughts on how this approach can enhance audience experience and build deeper brand engagement. If you read it, I hope you like it.
