ClimateWorks Foundation 2024 Funding Trends Report just dropped. In 2023, climate philanthropy hit a turning point, surging past $9 billion—a 20% jump from 2022—and outpacing overall philanthropic growth for the first time. Foundations led the charge, 3x more contributions over 4 years to reach $4.8 billion in 2023. Clean electricity, forests, and food systems remained top priorities, while fast-rising areas like super pollutants and sustainable finance gained traction. Public engagement emerged as the most-funded enabling strategy, signaling the growing importance of collective action. Yet, disparities persist. While funding to Africa, Asia, and Latin America grew by as much as 220%, 60% still flowed to the U.S. and Europe. The report calls for deeper, longer-term investments in regions and sectors with untapped potential, from Brazil’s pivotal role ahead of COP30 to the underfunded push for industrial decarbonization. The message is clear: philanthropy must go bigger and smarter—collaborate more, commit to multi-year funding, and scale solutions that match the speed of the crisis. 🔑 Traditional philanthropy often separates funders and community members, creating power imbalances where funders set the rules and practitioners work to meet them. Participatory Grantmaking (PGM) offers a fresh approach by bringing funders and those impacted by funding decisions together. 🌱 Taking this approach a step further, what might happen if the funder were in the room? I am honored that my blog made this list! While writing the blog, I thought about the current model of philanthropy- reactionary, event-driven, and dependent on the media cycle. To respond effectively to disasters, many things, from our language (#NoNaturalDisasters) to our overall response systems need to adapt. Climate change affects us all AND the issues we all care about — even if we don’t think they’re related. We’re currently reading this piece on the Lumina Foundation’s site that helps connect the dots, and is a call to action for the philanthropic sector to scale their support and funding for climate solutions. Inside Philanthropy: "The new report is the latest product of Good Energy , a nonprofit that the The New York Times dubbed “Hollywood’s Climate Advisor.” It’s one of a variety of philanthropy-backed organizations that bring climate narratives to screens around the world... Good Energy itself grew out of Joyner’s recognition that other social movements were working with Hollywood to put narratives on screen, whether that was Define American on immigration or IllumiNative Org on Native narratives, but not the climate movement. “At that point there was nothing,” she said. “That seemed like a really big gap.” Convincing Hollywood to act, it turned out, was the easier sell. “It’s actually been a lot harder to get climate philanthropy to invest in narrative change,” she said. As ClimateWorks Foundation has found, climate mitigation philanthropy accounts for just 2% of global philanthropy, and all public engagement funding around climate by foundations has accounted for about $255 million annually in recent years. Strategic communications and narrative change work are essentially smaller slices of that amount, and funding for films fits somewhere within them. The oil and gas industry, by contrast, spends about $750 million annually on climate-related communications. But amid burgeoning philanthropic interest in narrative change strategies and a growing willingness to fund intersectional work, perhaps climate narratives will benefit. Good Energy is now supported by an eclectic mix of backers, including some of the world’s biggest climate philanthropies like Walton Family Foundation and Quadrivium Foundation, as well as Pop Culture Collaborative. Another is Bloomberg Philanthropies. “This is a breath of fresh air, a really different approach,” said Katherine Oliver, a principal at Bloomberg who directs the film program and is a member of the Good Energy Advisory Council. Backing culture change is not always thought of as the domain of metrics-first funders like Bloomberg. As Oliver noted, “Mike Bloomberg has always said, ‘You can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” But Good Energy’s data-oriented approach has been a fit.” The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is one of the very few endowed philanthropies directly supporting not just docs about climate, but scripted storytelling. The grantmaker has funded or given awards to more than 800 films since 1995, including the climate parable and apocalypse comedy “Don’t Look Up.” Climate may not be an intentional focus for Sloan, but in recent years, it has become a more common ingredient. “I just run into climate because it's there rather than looking for it,” doron weber said. “In that sense, my program probably reflects the concerns that are out there.” These days in philanthropy, no matter what a funder is focused on, that is an increasingly common experience." https://lnkd.in/gV3c7eqq

Since I wrote and published this article in April of this year about why #climatetech isn't working I have been inundated with requests for "catch ups", mostly from former colleagues at the various companies I've worked at, but also a fair amount of people who I hadn't previously met. On average I would estimate that I've had a call a week in the past 7 months. This has been a joy. The topics of conversation have been largely the same and easily categorised into two overlapping buckets: 1/ Why do I do with this feeling I have that there is something wrong with this whole "green growth" idea? 2/ How do I figure out *what* to do? "I don't know," is my usual answer, "but I'm happy to talk about it." If this seems like a cop out, it isn't. It is exactly what I think needs to be done. Listen, learn, debate, understand, then act. In many ways the exact opposite of the cutthroat VC model that not only values speed and profit at the cost of breaking pretty much anything, but is well known for a ridiculously high failure rate. Anywhere between 50-90% depending on how you count. What a colossal waste of time, energy, money, and people that could otherwise have had real #impact. However, back to the What can I do? question. This will be an outcomes-based workforce fund designed to fill climate workforce gaps, increase access to economic mobility for workers, and support a diverse clean energy workforce.
