Congratulations to first author Samuel (Wendi) Zhu and co-supervisors Prof. Masoud Baghelani and Prof. Ashwin Iyer on the publication of his first paper, appearing in the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques and titled, "Dielectric Spectrum Extraction of Liquids Using Non-Contact Microwave Split Ring Resonator". This #openaccess work demonstrates reliable broad-bandwidth #dielectric #refractometry of liquid samples using multiple #harmonics of a simple #microwave split-ring resonator (#SRR) in a non-contact fashion. I spent a lot of time at IEEE & Accellera over the years trying to add support to HDLs for handling the issues of bleeding edge chip development, I could say I achieved nothing, but I did get the "alias" statement into SystemVerilog. The discussion usually gives me some ideas for how to tackle the problems, so if you are facing any of the below mentioned issues, I do have solutions. Our group has been working on millimeter wave communications for over 20 years. For example, I myself published the final integrated specification of IEEE 802.15.3c for millimeter-wave Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) in 2007. (IEEE 802.15-07-0761-00-003c) Our group also built and published a Channel Generator for 60 GHz and millimeter band WPANs in MATLAB in 2007, which is required for millimeter band WPAN standardization. (IEEE 802.15-07-0559-03-003c) However, IEEE 802.15.3c, a millimeter WPAN, and IEEE 802.11ad, a millimeter WLAN to be standardized later, have many similarities as WPANs, and I think that 3GPP's Sidelink can be used as a WPAN. However, although there are many experts in the respective fields of IEEE and 3GPP regarding this integration, it cannot be said that there are many people who can discuss across these multiple standardizations yet. A team of researchers at Princeton University led by Minjie Chen, associate professor co-appointed in Princeton ECE and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, has been awarded the First Place Prize Paper Award for 2023 in the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (TPEL). The paper, “How MagNet: Machine Learning Framework for Modeling Power Magnetic Material Characteristics,” introduces machine learning as a tool to model power magnetics, a material which is as complex as a protein, said Chen. Through machine learning modeling, the researchers hope to accelerate the design process for the next generation of power electronics. “This paper changed how people think about the modeling of magnetics,” said Chen. The effort included collecting massive amounts of data to train machine learning models and then building a website as an open-source platform for demonstrating the model. To build the website, the team turned to Vineet Bansal, senior research software engineer with the Center for Statistics and Machine Learning. According to the team, Bansal’s work was instrumental to getting the site up and running. “Users from all over the world go to this website,” said Bansal. “You need to take care that it runs fast enough and it's not going to get overloaded with hundreds of people accessing it at the same time.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/e2NNpkjB

Development of mass digital storage technology: An article by Tom Coughlin and Roger Hoyt in IEEE Computer magazine's September 2024 issue examines the path of several mass storage technologies until the year 2037. NAND Flash chips are expected to offer 2-4 TB capacity by 2027, using hundreds of circuit layers. Beyond that, the picture is unclear. Hard disk drives may reach 100 TB capacity, with recording density of more than 10 TB per square inch by 2037. Sun Chenghao and his team at Northeastern University propose a groundbreaking adaptive dead-time modulation scheme for bidirectional LLC resonant converters used in energy routers, enhancing efficiency and reducing losses. Published in the CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems Vol 10, Issue 4, their research addresses the limitations of classical dead-time designs by dynamically adjusting the converter's parameters based on operating conditions, thereby achieving zero-voltage switching across a wide range of loads. This method significantly improves the performance and reliability of energy routers in smart grids. Willow improves our T1 coherence times by a factor of 5x and expands the number of qubits to 105, all without sacrificing the fast gates, tunability, and connectivity of Sycamore. This enables us to show two exciting scientific achievements: 1. Operate logical qubits below the error correction threshold, a long sought-after goal for the field for almost 30 years.
