Through this collaboration, SLPs and BCBAs can develop consistent methods for identifying and shaping better articulation which ensures procedural integrity through systematic and sequenced instructional practices. These collaborative efforts, supported by data collection on client outcomes and staff performance, allow for the empirical validation of the techniques used. This overview presents a training process designed for the effective implementation of phonetic hand cues, followed by outcome data, highlighting changes, and staff proficiency, knowledge, and confidence in SLP and BCBA collaboration skills. Should swallowing be dichotomized? Is it within the scope of the speech pathologist to visualize the esophagus during the performance of the MBSS? How (and who) should address swallowing disorders? These questions have been at the forefront of conversation for many years. Expert opinion and current research demonstrate the interrelationship of the swallowing continuum with changes occurring in one aspect of the swallowing continuum due to dysfunction in another (Jones et al., 1985; Reedy et al., 2022; Triadafilopoulos et al., 1992). Gregor et al. (2023) state, "The swallowing continuum is highly complex and interrelated and has both upstream and downstream implications for volitional swallowing behaviors, anatomic and physiologic impairments, and interventions." Speech pathologists, otolaryngologists, and gastroenterologists all play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders; however, due to the differences in assessment tools and treatment options, as well as the separation of the swallowing continuum into phases, swallowing is typically not evaluated as a entire continuum, which falls out of alignment with current research regarding the swallowing continuum (Gullung et al., 2012 Lever et al., 2007; Madhavan et al., 2015; Miles et al., 2019; O’Rourke et al., 2014; Watts et al., 2019). When swallowing is dichotomized and standardized practices are not followed, issues may arise, such as the prescription of ineffective or inaccurate treatments, communication issues within the interdisciplinary team, delays in diagnostic accuracy, and higher healthcare costs (Martin-Harris et al., 2020; Reedy et al., 2021; Triadafilopoulos et al., 1992; Watts et al., 2019). Based on current evidence and expert opinion, swallowing should not be dichotomized; rather, should be assessed as a continuum with interdisciplinary collaboration within the team. A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst), an SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist), and an OT (Occupational Therapist) are all professionals who support children, but they focus on different areas. • BCBA: Specializes in behavior analysis, focusing on understanding and improving behavior, especially in children with autism or other developmental disorders. They use techniques like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help with skills like communication, social interactions, self-care, and reducing challenging behaviors. • SLP: Focuses on speech and language development, helping children with communication issues. This can include supporting children with speaking, understanding language, listening skills, social communication, and even swallowing or feeding difficulties. • OT (Occupational Therapist): Focuses on everyday activities, or “occupations,” such as dressing, eating, playing, and writing. They help children develop fine motor skills (like using their hands for tasks) and improve coordination, balance, and sensory processing. If your child has trouble with tasks like holding a pencil, buttoning a shirt, or handling sensory sensitivities, an OT can help. While all professionals might work with similar children, they address different aspects of development—BCBAs focus on behavior, while SLPs concentrate on communication, while an OT focuses on physical tasks and daily life skills. All roles play a key role in supporting your child’s growth.

Navigating Fairness Bias in Our Role as SLPs Have you ever been here? You are staring down your caseload size or the amount of work you have and a sense of injustice starts to creep. Sometimes work levels or compensation seem tolerable, but then you go to a conference or hear about another SLP and their circumstances seem better. Maybe it's accurate or maybe it's not. But how do these feelings color our perception and affect our mood? Can we do anything about it and does thinking this way actually do us any good? Is there a way around it? Research on fairness bias suggests there is. This is one of eight essays we are writing on bias as it relates to our jobs as SLPS and this one includes a hysterical video of an experiment with Capuchin monkeys. #speechpathology #speechtherapy
