I don’t have a job to offer, but I’m developing a podcast with the goal of giving a voice to creatives who are between projects. We’ll discuss your career, your ambitions, and what makes your work unique. My intention is to create a platform where your voice and talent can reach a broader audience—maybe even recruiters. It could also help others in the same situation find support and inspiration. At the very least, it’s a chance to connect and learn from each other. It baffles me how many artists don’t want to take control of their own careers. First, if you're not using TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram, you're missing out. These platforms are free and give you direct access to fans. Second, you can't just rely on your talent. You need the complete package: a unique look, a strong brand, and engaging content. Labels need to see that you're marketable. Artists, you need to be your own promoter, know exactly who you are as an artist, and bring something unique to the table. It’s not enough to just have talent—you need the complete package. That’s the reality, plain and simple. If you’re aiming to get signed, labels need to see that you’re marketable, that YOU are marketable. You’ve got to have everything in order. Consistency is key. Show up regularly, engage with your audience, and build a community. The more you put out, the bigger your audience will grow. What are you waiting for? Make your own reality. Stop waiting for music biz execs to make decisions for you. Take control of your destiny and start engaging with your future fans today. You can use these platforms to build such a strong fan base that labels and executives can't say no. The power is in your hands. You just have to work hard for it and be undeniable. How getting laid off from my entry-level digital video producer job led me to become a TV executive producer within 2 years: In 2020, I got laid off and was collecting unemployment. I had to make a decision: A. Get another job at a company ("not risky"). B. Make my side hustle film projects my full-time gig ("risky"). I decided to take the risk and go 100% all-in on my film projects for a year straight. I downgraded my living situation, cut expenses, picked up part-time work when necessary, and dedicated my time towards building a body of work. 1 year later, I sold the original film concept for what is now my first unscripted TV show on Prime Video & Amazon Studios. Every rejection is a lesson. It forced me to re-evaluate, adapt, and figure out a way to keep going. The REAL risk was staying at a job that wouldn't value or promote me for years. BONUS POST FOR TODAY: I had an actor audition for a relatively large video game role a few months back and the client inquired what else he had worked on. When I asked him he said, "Well I voiced X, Y, and Z in X, Y, and Z." I took a look at IMDB and couldn't find anything. I checked Behind the Voice Actors......nothing there either. I went back to him and said, "Hey man, I'm not finding these credits anywhere. Do you have samples of the work? Can you verify it?" He responded with, ".......well, I'm in Chapter 3 of the game so if you play up to that point you'll hear me. Or maybe there's a video on YouTube somewhere? I could also be in the end-credits if there's a screenshot somewhere...." <sigh> Guys- credits are EVERYTHING. If you voice for video games, film, television, animation, or anything where you play a character, they should hold as much value to you as money because oftentimes they're the key to your next gig. Everyone is going to want to know what you've done in this industry, and people like me have the unfortunate job of verifying it to the client. Here are a few things to remember: -After a project has concluded, ask your contact (whether that's the voice director, or the client directly) when it's okay to advertise that you've worked on it. When you get permission add it to your resume, your socials, and any database you can add it to yourself. Make yourself a nice little social media post (with permission granted, of course) so you've got a record of your accomplishment. -While we're on the subject of permission: READ. YOUR. CONTRACTS. If you're under NDA, definitely keep good records of the roles you've done but don't go blabbing all over town about until you're told that you can. This is a real bad look. -Don't be shy about asking clients, directors or whoever is in charge to add your credit to any database that they're listing their project on. The worst they can do is say they no or not respond. -Take matters into your own hands media-wise. Ask for samples from the client or the studio that you recorded at. Find clips on YouTube people may have posted. If you're a gamer, screen-capture yourself in the game. Anything that gives you a paper trail that you worked on the project. -This goes without saying, but for anyone new in the business- DON'T LIE and DON'T GUESS. Don't say you voiced something if you didn't. It's a small world and someone will figure you out quickly. If you voiced NPCs and you don't remember the names, ask the client or studio. Don't guess because you may accidentally end up taking credit for someone else's part. Chances are there's a record. Credits are an integral part of your career. Without them, you're basically the "new guy" every time you audition for a role. So keep good records, and brag appropriately and in a timely manner about your accomplishments. "What do you want to do with your career?" I've always hated this question. It assumes that somewhere in the end of all of the chaos, there's a singular, fixed destination I’m supposed to be crawling towards. But I want to do a lot of things. I still do. Mia brilliantly captures the anxiety many feel about traditional career paths becoming increasingly stagnant in this article. The metaphor of being stuck in the middle on a corporate ladder resonates deeply with many in our industry, and it can be deeply unsettling not to have leadership or mentorship through these awkward beginning ladder steps. But maybe we're asking ourselves the wrong question. Instead of "what do you want to do?", what if we asked "what gaps can you fill right now?" For me, the answer isn’t found through intense internal soul-searching, but by simply putting an ear to the ground and listening. Where are the pain points? Where can you become indispensable? Even if it's just for now. Even if it changes tomorrow. What excites me about this moment in Hollywood is that, for the first time in a long time, NONE of us really knows what the path forward looks like. Veterans with decades of experience, mid-career professionals, and newcomers - we're all navigating unprecedented change together. There's something oddly liberating about that shared uncertainty. Something very… democratizing. Yes, the old routes to success are becoming harder to climb. Dear Younger Me, As you take your first steps into the music industry, I know you’re eager to prove yourself, but let me remind you—it’s okay not to know everything yet. You don’t have to have all the answers right now. It’s a journey, and learning from others is a big part of it. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, soak in wisdom, and grow from the experiences shared by those around you. Most importantly, don’t isolate yourself. Go out often, meet people, and build genuine connections. You can’t do life alone, especially in this industry where relationships matter just as much as talent. Those connections will help shape your journey in ways you can’t even imagine right now. It’s okay trust your instincts, seek validation within yourself, rather than from others. Automation is just the surface issue; at its core, these movements reflect the absence of a clear, human-centered plan for those whose jobs are being displaced. While automation is inevitable, the real challenge isn’t the technology, it’s the lack of a thoughtful contingency plan for the people impacted. As business leaders, your responsibility goes beyond cutting costs and streamlining processes. Yes, automation can improve efficiency, but it shouldn’t leave workers without direction or opportunity. The question you should be asking isn’t, "How do we automate?" but "What do we owe to the people affected by automation?" /Contingency Plan/ What we’re seeing in these labor movements is a demand for something simple: a future. Workers aren’t resisting change; often they’re resisting being left behind. Without a clear plan for upskilling and transitioning workers into new roles, automation feels like a threat rather than an evolution. It’s on leaders to create that plan. Automation should come with a roadmap for workers to develop the skills they need to thrive in a more tech-driven world. On the surface this is about keeping jobs, but at its core this is about fostering a society that’s prepared for technological change. /Leadership/ Leaders need to take responsibility for the human side of automation. "Fix it in prep" This is my favorite mindset when I walk into each project. We often hear on film sets the term "we'll fix it in post" which is basically admitting that there's no way to fix the issue during filming and it's now the post production team's responsibility to fix it. Oftentimes I notice there's many people with the "we'll fix it in post" mentality, and often these are issues that could have been easily taken care of if someone had fixed it in prep. But how do you fix a problem before it becomes one? Well that's when I come in, as a Production Coordinator and Assistant Director that is my job. To ask the right questions to avoid issues that could potentially arise during the run of a show. I of course can't predict the future but I like to be prepared to fix the problem as efficiently as possible. I create systems that make it easier for everyone involved in the project to find the easiest ways to find answers. It is honestly my favorite part of the process. The best part of the “fix it in prep” mentality is that it doesn’t only apply to film sets and film production. I bring this approach to every project I do, whether it is an art installation or a proof of concept for a marketing campaign.
