Thoughtful piece by the Vermont Employee Ownership Center on employee ownership. While it proceeds to go deep on the theoretical arguments in favor of employee ownership, I have to call out one of the more practical prescriptions: "One factor (standing in the way of widespread employee ownership adoption) is the difficulty in competing with well-capitalized private equity funds that can quickly buy out a business owner and send them off with the full value of their business in cash. The ESOP holding company model is one useful strategy, but it’s clear we need more financial tools that can mimic the ease and convenience of private equity deals but with the aim of transferring ownership to the employees. And insofar as we’re focused on getting employee ownership onto the default menu of options to consider when a business owner is ready to sell, such tools are essential." Wolkowitz & Dr. Stacy Feiner While reading this, I asked myself what the reality actually looks like. "We do it well and whether I necessarily need a high-performance family office, I have no idea" - says a G1 entrepreneur. "We're already doing well..." you often hear this phrase, but well from what, if you have no source and reference points? And then there is often a family officer, ex-banker or lawyer or similar, who lacks any entrepreneurial gene and all too often thinks he is the diva in the room. The ego of the principal and the one-sided, often deliberate ignorance of the family officer, who has his own interests in mind rather than the interests of the family (exceptions prove the rule) prevent a family office from being a high-performance family office! Last weekend, my best friend Sally Hurley and I chatted about Bob Newhart’s legendary hilarious comedy skit “𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗜𝘁.” In the iconic episode, Newhart plays a deadpan therapist and responds to his patient’s spiraling worries with a blunt “𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗜𝘁.” It’s comedy gold — yet beneath the humor holds a powerful takeaway: the power of stopping unproductive behaviors and thought patterns. Over the years, Sally and I have shared plenty of laughs while reminding each other of this “𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗜𝘁” approach whenever we needed a mental reset. One time, I over-committed to meetings that didn’t align with my goals, and Sally’s gentle reminder — “What CAN you 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 doing?”—shifted my perspective and gave me clarity to refocus on what truly mattered. That small shift made a BIG impact. Here are a few ways to apply this “𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗜𝘁” approach to everyday life: + 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗲. Whether it’s endless scrolling on social media or taking on tasks out of guilt, evaluate what’s not adding value and let it go. + 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀. If you’re delaying a goal, decision, or project, acknowledge the hesitation and disrupt the pattern with action over avoidance. + 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸. When doubt or comparison sneaks in, take control. Repeat to yourself, “Stop it,” and replace it with something encouraging. + 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. If a decision is paralyzing you, try simplifying your approach. Trust yourself and take action. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Bob Newhart’s comedic delivery adds levity, but the lesson is powerful: The best way to overcome what’s holding us back sometimes is to step in and tell ourselves to “𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗶𝘁.” Simple, direct, and surprisingly effective.
