Today Australia’s peak communications, digital and video game industry associations have released the next phase of the Draft Online Safety Codes for community consultation. These codes are designed to protect children from exposure to online pornography and other harmful content. The Draft Safety Codes are a joint effort between companies committed to online safety and Government to strengthen safeguards for minors when it comes to online pornography and age-inappropriate content.  These codes are designed to protect and support children and provide parents and carers with more control over what their children see. The codes have been informed by input from the office of the eSafety Commissioner including through its July 2024 position paper. IGEA worked closely with our members and  Digital Industry Group Inc. 15 projects have been selected to provide evidence that supports gambling harm prevention and reduction in New Zealand. These projects will form part of the research programme of the Strategy to Prevent and Minimise Gambling Harm 2022/23 to 2024/25 (Strategy). After a rigorous procurement process that kicked off in September 2023, the procurement process attracted interest from researchers across New Zealand and worldwide. Sonia Chen, Principal Research Advisor at the Ministry of Health, says the funded projects were of a high calibre and many projects would contribute to more than one of the research priorities outlined in the Strategy. Gambling harm can be hidden, and it is estimated that about 1 in 5 people in Aotearoa New Zealand will experience harm in their lifetime due to their own or someone else’s gambling. It is also a significant social, economic, and health issue that disproportionately affects Māori, Pacific peoples, Asian communities, young people/rangatahi, and people on lower incomes. NZ REPORT - A new report released in 2024, from the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey (NZCVS), surveyed approximately 32,000 New Zealanders between 2018 to 2022. Participants were asked about their experiences with crime. The survey collected information on reported and non-reported offences, and asked the participants about their socio-demographic characteristics, including sexual orientation and gender identity. The 2024 report found LGBTQ+ individuals were much more likely to be victims of crime than non-LGBTQ+ individuals. Almost half of LGBTQ+ respondents (46%) reported being a victim of at least one crime in the previous year, compared to a third of non-LGBTQ+ people (31%). Members of the LGBTQ+ community were also much more likely to be a victim of crime more than once. According to the survey, approximately 22% of LGBTQ+ individuals experienced more than one victimisation in the previous year, compared with 11% of non-LGBTQ+ individuals. Two groups stood out in particular: bisexual individuals and transgender/gender-diverse people.
