AI, Longevity and Love - how are they all connected? They make each other better and are essential to each other’s success Lots of fantastic discussions about how AI will bring out the best in humans including augmenting our time and ability to connect at DOC in Napa and Wisdom 2.0 in SF this past week. Huge thanks to Jordan Shlain, MD, Kevin Ryan and John Battelle for organizing leaders across traditional medicine, longevity, academic research, and biotech and Soren Gordhamer and Mark Hyman, MD for bringing together the best of AI and longevity AI shows incredible promise for healing humans and increasing longevity, here are my key takeaways from these events: We can live to 95 today if we focus on longevity and healthspan, there are biotech solutions using AI to epigenetically reprogram cells to reverse aging and disease that will enable us to extend lifespan by 20+ years but it will take for these to be real Fun to see Mark Hyman, MD interview Eric Verdin, they both discussed how they lowered their biological age by 10+ years and feel the best ever There are so many simple things we can do, walking 30 minutes a day reduces cardiovascular, alzheimer’s and cancer risk by 40% but 80% of the US doesn’t even do this Within 5 years we will have a whole new set of FDA approved psychedelic drugs for depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. Immunotherapies will also expand so we can avoid chemo and living cancer free will be in reach We need the US to move to a functional medicine, integrative care model and get out of this sick care model, this level of innovation is more likely to come from upstarts, the incumbents have too much revenues to lose in this transition AI will not replace physicians, instead those physicians that don’t use AI will be replaced. 50% of physicians are burned out, AI can help! Recently, I was part of a panel on generative AI at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, moderated by Amanda Silberling. Amanda asked a great question, “But is it Art? How to harness generative AI in music and video production without displacing artists.” At Splice we support producers at various stages of their creative journey, from Grammy-winning artists to bedroom producers. With my experience building creator tools at GitHub and Adobe and most recently Splice, I think about this question all the time. First – there will be plenty of bad content made with AI – click bait designed to capture micro-seconds of attention in an increasingly noisy world, and in some cases, this will be designed to do real harm. So, yes – there will be “AI slop” but there will also be great things created with AI - and some of it will be art. And, the way we think of art will change over time. “Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copeland won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945, and Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN” won the same prize in 2017.  Storytelling evolves, Art evolves, and with AI – it will evolve even faster. As more people have access to these tools, artists will take even greater risks and break boundaries - innovation will flourish, and art will move in extraordinary new directions. But before it can do that, as an industry, we MUST agree to do three critical things.  1. Respect the rights of creators. Provenance matters. We must ensure AI-assisted works don’t exploit the original contributions of artists. 2. Copyright clarity should be provided to everyone using these tools. Creators need to understand their rights around ownership of new creative works made with AI. 3. Build tools that enhance the creative experience. Preserving the integrity of the creative process is paramount, and technologists must collaborate with artists to build the future. These three things are fundamental to the next phase of evolution as AI continues to converge with creation. I agree, AI will be at its best when people don't know they’re using it - but I know people who love making music are not looking for AI to take away their creative experience.

**📣 In the News: News Publishers Sue Microsoft and OpenAI** An intriguing development today, with reports that a coalition of eight leading news publishers owned by Alden Global Capital (AGC), including the iconic Chicago Tribune, are taking a stand against tech behemoths Microsoft and OpenAI. The root of contention? Unlawful use of copyrighted articles to train their generative AI models. Without permissions, without payments. 🔮 Pitching My Prediction: This lawsuit not only demonstrates the complex challenges associated with balancing innovation, copyrights and compensation, but also lays a precedent for how intellectual property might be governed in the age of AI. 🔹 Fundamental copyrights are under scrutiny here. Intellectual property can't be disregarded even amidst the urgency to develop artificial intelligence. AI must be both ethical and respectful to creators' rights. 🔹 Will stricter regulations follow? This might lead to amendments in copyright laws, delineating clearer rules around the use of such materials for AI training. 🔹 Cue shifting industry standards. With a stronger focus on ethical data use, we may witness a shift towards creating AI-based applications using open-source data or generated data, respecting copyrights and encouraging fair trade in this brave, data-centric world. 💭 Closing Thoughts At its core, transparent and fair use of data is fundamental to any technology incubation.
