The future of wireless services of all types is likely to involve more spectrum-sharing and other more sophisticated approaches to #spectrum assignment and management. This applies to #5G, #6G, #WiFi, #satellite, audiovisual and various classes of aviation and martime networks, as well as government and defence usage. Sharing will occur based on multiple dimensions - location, duration, directionality, power and obviously frequency. That, in turn, will require a range of key enablers, including technological components such as spectrum databases, sensing systems, better transceivers, mapping tools, cross-technology signalling and much more. There will also need to be streamlined regulatory processes, spectrum marketplaces, and a whole variety of use-cases for AI + spectrum. There will also be a need for more international cooperation and (hopefully) eventual harmonisation. The evolution of spectrum-sharing is a central theme for me at the moment, and something that regularly crops up in my discussions with regulators, operators, vendors and investors. I’ve written another piece on US #spectrum policy & #mobile bands - and what should be done in preparation for #WRC27 over the next 3 years. This is part of my ongoing focus on global spectrum-sharing policy, as well as my advisory work with SFTF. This time it has been published via Fierce Network. My view is that the US should directly engage with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) process at multiple levels, to push for greater understanding and technological innovation in sharing approaches. In particular the focus of IMT (ie #5G & #6G) spectrum should be on regulators assuming a “sharing-native” future in the 2030s, instead of the historic focus of assigning exclusive licences. This should be reflected in any figure IMT identifications & footnotes. In addition, it should be a core part of the various study groups and working parties’ efforts. There also needs to be far more realism about mobile traffic on the international stage - its flattening growth, the many non-credible forecasts, its localisation to specific areas & the impact of aspects such as FWA and indoor use. A critical aspect is dealing with the proposed IMT study bands for WRC-27, which seem “coincidentally” to be exactly the same as those used within NATO for military communications. At the moment, the US #CBRS band is one of the leading examples of dynamic spectrum sharing in practice. The work by NTIA & NSF is also advancing the technological base, including the role of AI. 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐀𝐍: 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) is a transformative concept in mobile communications, aimed at creating a more flexible, interoperable, and cost-efficient RAN architecture. By disaggregating traditional RAN components and embracing open standards, Open RAN enables network operators to mix and match components from different vendors. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐀𝐍 Radio Unit (O-RU) The Radio Unit is responsible for handling the radio frequency (RF) functions of the RAN. It includes elements like the antenna and the transceiver, which facilitate communication between the mobile devices and the network. In an Open RAN architecture, the RU is designed to be interoperable with different vendors' Distributed Units (DU) and Centralized Units (CU). Distributed Unit (O-DU) The Distributed Unit manages the real-time processing tasks required for radio communication. This includes tasks like encoding, scheduling, and resource allocation. By placing the DU closer to the RU, often at the edge of the network, latency is minimized, improving the performance of applications requiring real-time communication, such as gaming and virtual reality. Centralized Unit (O-CU) The Centralized Unit handles higher-layer protocols and non-real-time functions. These include tasks such as mobility management, session management, and overall control of the data flow. The CU can be located centrally, managing multiple DUs and RUs, leading to more efficient resource utilization. Near-Real-Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) The Near-RT RIC is a critical component for enhancing the performance and efficiency of the RAN through real-time analytics and control. Operating with a latency of less than one second, it enables dynamic radio resource management, interference mitigation, and load balancing. This allows the network to adapt quickly to changing conditions, ensuring optimal performance. Non-Real-Time RIC (Non-RT RIC) The Non-RT RIC focuses on longer-term data analytics and policy-based control to improve the overall efficiency and performance of the RAN. It works on timescales beyond one second and is responsible for tasks such as machine learning model training, policy management, and performance optimization. Insights from the Non-RT RIC are used to inform the Near-RT RIC, creating a feedback loop that enhances the network's adaptability and intelligence. Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) The SMO platform oversees the end-to-end management and orchestration of the RAN and its associated services. Getting A/B comparisons running automatically in the minds of all your #OSS evaluators. Are you familiar with David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) and Jason Fried? As far as I know, they've never had anything to do with telco OSS tools, but I do love the clarity of a lot of the concepts they share and in books like, "Rework" (listed in my uncommon must-read OSS books) and "Remote". They've helped bring clarity and a different perspective to the world of OSS for me even though I've never seen them write about OSS directly. Let's take the following quote as an example from a DHH post on LinkedIn: "When Ruby on Rails was launched over twenty years ago, I was a twenty-some young programmer convinced that anyone who gave my stack a try would accept its universal superiority for solving The Web Problem. So I pursued the path of the crusade, attempting to convert the unenlightened masses by the edge of a pointed argument. And for a long time, I thought that's what had worked. That this was why Ruby on Rails took off, became one of the most popular full-stack web frameworks of all time, inspired countless clones, and created hundreds of billions in enterprise value for companies built on it. But I was wrong. It wasn't the crusade that did it. Since those early days, I've talked to thousands of programmers who adopted Ruby on Rails back then, and do you know what virtually every one of them cite? That original 15-minute blog video. Which didn't contain a single comparison to other named solutions or specifically pointed arguments against alternatives. It just showed what you could do with Ruby on Rails, and the A/B comparison automatically ran inside the mind of every programmer who was exposed to that. That's what did it. Showing something great, and letting those who weren't happy with their current situation become inspired to check it out. Because those are the only people who are able to convert to your cause anyway" There are countless crusades currently underway in the world of OSS transformations. Some crusaders are from vendor-land, trying to spruik the merits of the solutions they're selling. Some crusaders are from operator-land, trying to persuade their colleagues of the benefits of those vendor solutions. Others are trying to build a solution (and possibly a career) by being entrusted with building new OSS from the ground up. The challenge though is that there is no perfect OSS solution and there is never a single way that OSS can solve a problem or problem set. Many crusaders are attempting to convert the unenlightened masses by the edge of a pointed argument - pointed arguments against alternatives. Excellent post by Javier Domínguez Lacasa about spectrum policy for midband Midband is the lifeline for Telcos to provide high-speed and reliable data services. There is no other spectrum band that offers the reach, bandwidth, and properties like midband. Unfortunately, this is a scarce resource and extremely expensive. As a scarce resource, regulators need to prioritize the benefits of the majority of users who connect daily to these services. Consider this: effective spectrum allocation can enhance network capacity by up to 50%, which directly improves service quality and user satisfaction. With 5G technology expected to cover one-third of the world’s population by 2025, the efficient use of midband spectrum becomes even more crucial. This band is essential for enabling advancements in IoT, smart cities, and autonomous vehicles, and its optimal use could significantly boost these developments. Moreover, the economic implications are substantial. A 10% increase in mobile broadband penetration can lead to a 1.5% rise in GDP in developing economies. Timing couldn't be better as Spectrum Effect was just this week awarded the patent for the use of AI and Machine Learning Models for classifying interference types in Mobile Operator RAN networks. I have strong conviction on AI's ability to drive more efficient and effective operations of mobility networks and ultimately better outcomes for consumers of the services that mobile networks enable. Now here is an article that seems to those of us in the Broadband business to be intuitively obvious; Broadband competition has increased bandwidth and decreased prices. Duh!? Just like what happened to the voice and Long Distance market before it, increased competition has helped consumers get more and pay less. The down side of this model could be a reduction in the number of Broadband providers (ISPs) in the ten years or so. How many Long Distance providers prior to 2000 can you name that are still in business? National voice providers? ISPs should start looking at consolidation partners and services to provider over these "dumb" pipes now before Broadband becomes a commodity and it is too late. The US government continues to support the development of the Open RAN ecosystem as it seeks to widen vendor choice for operators networks. The $420 million in new funding announced by the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is a significant boost for the development of open radio units. This initiative has two key aims: ▪ Commercialisation: Accelerating readiness for commercial trials to prove the technology's viability for wider deployment. This has been a long held reservation on the new technology. Many operators we speak with have concerns about wide level commercial deployments in existing infrastructure. ▪ Innovation: Supporting R&D efforts in Open RAN performance and capabilities to drive the technology forward. The investment is a clear signal that the US remains committed to fostering a competitive, diversified telecoms equipment market. It should open up opportunities for US-based Open RAN vendors and could create a more innovation-friendly environment following a difficult few months with some of the larger names in the sector #OpenRAN #telecomsequipment #NTIA #innovation #USinvestment

📶 The latest statistics on 5G indicate growth, with projections of connections expected to increase from 1.6 billion to 2.1 billion between the end of 2023 and the end of 2024. More networks are operating in standalone mode compared to an intermediate stage of 5G called non-standalone, which is based on LTE core technologies. So, there are some good dynamics; the number of 'real' 5G networks is on the rise, and I’d like to share some updates. As we increasingly assess the security of 5G SA networks, here's what we find as a result of security testing on systems to identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses before actual hackers can exploit them: 📊 The sample size is getting bigger (a few dozens of networks assessed), but the industry's average is still almost useless to define — with quite low protections (very exposed) in some cases, and very secure environments in others. This makes us think there is still a long way to go in sharing and implementing best practices, incentivizing secure deployments, and aiming to increase the average level of protection to be above medium. 🤫 The largest number of accomplished attacks leads to the discovery of network structure, successful and, in many cases, undetected lateral movements within the network, and disclosure of subscriber information. 🚫 Denial of service, either for network function or for a group of subscribers, is still ranked second, showing that hackers' ability to impact the service, potentially causing outages, is quite likely. ⚙️ Profile disclosure of network functions and manipulation of network configurations, being more challenging to achieve, but very reasonable to focus on from an adversarial point of view, are in third place. As an example, here is the type of denial of service: a hacker can force mass deregistration of network elements, leading to service outage for subscribers. 🔌 The execution of an HTTP2 /nnrf-nfm/v1/nf-instances/{nfInstanceID} request deletes the profile of the network function that was registered in NRF. The availability of network functions, whose profiles were deleted in this manner, could be disrupted for 2 to 30 minutes, depending on the network configuration or the duration of repeated attacks. General advice to mitigate such impacts: ✔️ Implement obligatory authentication and authorization of services. 🛡️ Properly filter and police traffic between network segments. 📋 Conduct security audits to ensure the above two measures are correctly applied and that there are no critical errors in network configuration. #5G #Cybersecurity #NetworkSecurity #IntegrationChallenges #SecurityGen

Dynamic Spectrum Sharing and Multi-RAT Spectrum Sharing Through O-RAN Architecture The challenge of limited spectrum availability complicates the transition from 5G to 6G. To address this challenge, simplifying spectrum migration is essential. The integration of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) within the O-RAN ALLIANCE O-RAN architecture through the use of RIC and SMO offers a promising approach to managing spectrum efficiently as mobile networks evolve. By leveraging advanced RIC AI/ML algorithms and comprehensive data analytics, O-RAN enables dynamic and intelligent spectrum sharing between 5G and 6G. ◼ Implementation of DSS in O-RAN O-RAN facilitates this through its RIC and SMO components. Steps to Implement DSS in O-RAN Step 1: Policy Development and Communication Non-RT RIC: Develops and updates long-term DSS policies based on broad and historical network data, traffic patterns, and predictions. Communication: These policies are communicated to Near-RT RIC via the A1 interface. Step 2: Real-Time Decision Making Near-RT RIC: Receives policies and translates them into actionable, real-time decisions using xApps (applications running in the RIC). It handles the immediate adaptation of spectrum allocation between for example 4G and 5G networks. Step 3: Configuration and Enforcement RAN via E2 interface: Implements the DSS decisions to configure network elements for dynamic spectrum sharing, ensuring efficient resource utilization and optimal service delivery. Integration with SMO SMO Role: Manages overall orchestration and lifecycle management of network functions and service capabilities. It also plays a crucial role in gathering and disseminating data across RICs and network elements. ◼ Training Dataset and Data Collection in SMO/RIC Accurate and comprehensive datasets are essential for training the AI/ML models deployed within the RIC to predict traffic patterns, manage resources, and make informed DSS decisions. The effectiveness of DSS heavily relies on the quality and comprehensiveness of these datasets. Data Collection in SMO/RIC Non-RT RIC Long-Term Data Collection: Aggregates extensive historical network performance data, user mobility patterns, and service usage statistics. Data Sources: Includes external databases, network logs, and telemetry from various network elements interfaced through the O1 and O2 protocols. Near-RT RIC Real-Time Data Collection: Focuses on real-time network states, quality metrics like SINR, throughput levels, and user equipment reports. Dynamic Adaptation: Utilizes this real-time data to adapt and optimize the spectrum sharing dynamically, supporting the continuous tuning of DSS policies. If you have not read this paper from 2021 by Caroline Gabriel with Analysys Mason please do. It outlines (predicts) what is NEXT for in-building wireless and is exciting and coming in the next 5 years. To be fair much of the tech will need to be developed to accomplish it but it's all attainable (challenges in the areas of sync, antennas, server capacity, etc.). Most importantly read the part about cell splitting with neighbor cells. FCC Restores Net Neutrality Prices To Go Up.... What else does this mean for Telecom/CableCom players The end result is that prices are going to go up and Telecom/CableCom operators will site the FCC decision as "a" or "the" driver. If you look at the price increase that have occurred in the US they have increased by double digit percentages each year for the last 2 to 3 years.
