There is a thing in #govcon I keep hearing and I'm opposed to it. If the first time you see something on Sam, it's too late. False. Each award I won, I first saw it on Sam. To this day I've never spoken to a KO or decision makers about an opportunity. When I respond to RFIs, the KO has never reached back out, nor answered any questions. This myth is wrong and moreso, it can stifle competition. When you start with govcon, all you have is Sam to see opportunities. No one is going to give you the time or opportunity to meet and develop the relationships needed to get the chance to steer opportunity. So you know who gets that? Boeing. Raytheon. Star link. Amazon. The large who have an office either in the agency or the numbers to the people in those offices. On a director level. As a small business owner, Xavier Becerra isn't going to take my call. But they will if Kirk Kaminsky calls them. I hate this myth. It's false and y'all shouldn't be spreading it. Especially those on or who left the government side. You should be encouraging small businesses to search Sam, and respond even if and especially when: It's the first time you've seen the opportunity And it's something you can do And you have the time and resources to respond. This is why I'm wondering if the federal agencies really do want small businesses. Cuz of shit like this. So un-capitalistic. I heard this same sentiment twice this weekend on 2 different podcasts. And I'm like damnit, why do they keep saying this? People: If the 1st time you see an opportunity on Sam and you have enough time to respond and you can do it, RESPOND. You not responding is killing competition and taking food off your table.

Building Trust and Credibility as a Technical Leader Trust and credibility are the cornerstones of effective leadership. As an technical expert moving into a leadership role, your technical skills have earned you credibility, but building trust requires a different set of skills. Trust is built through consistency, transparency, and integrity. Your team needs to know that they can rely on you and that you have their best interests at heart. This means being honest, keeping your promises, and showing respect for others. Credibility, on the other hand, is about demonstrating competence and reliability. It's about showing that you have the knowledge and skills to lead effectively. This involves not only technical expertise but also the ability to make sound decisions and provide clear direction. To build trust and credibility, focus on your actions and how they align with your words. Be consistent in your behaviour, communicate openly, and take responsibility for your mistakes. Show that you are committed to the success of your team and the organisation. What actions can you take today to build trust and credibility with your team? 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞? Like many disciplines there are charlatans, naysayers, bullies, and skeptics with respect to Program Management. Charlatans and naysayers are those that say ANYONE can do program management and there is nothing special about those that play the role. This is often backed up with the charlatan trying to manage programs and failing miserably. The bullies don't believe any special skills, practices, models, or anything is need to manage projects, portfolios, and programs... Unfortunately, some of these folks get results but do so at the expense of people. The culture and environment in these circumstances are normally toxic. People tend to hate their job, perform poorly, and attrition is high. Skeptics, well, I appreciate skeptics because most can be convinced through experience. This latter group actually demonstrate the art side of program management. By the way, the answer to the question is: BOTH. So, skeptics are turned by the art. A great program manager knows the science (models, tools, principles, role, etc.) and also knows that it's about the people. You can have all of the fancy science you want but if you can't engage the people... you will NOT be successful. The beauty to me is that it is a balance. When you create the proper infrastructure (processes and tools) and engage the people (communication, clarity of goals, transparency) you have set a foundation for a successful implementation. Most organizations only measure this through cost, schedule, and scope. I would argue that if you don't include engagement and culture metrics as well you are missing out on the secret sauce. So practice the effective use of tools (Atlassian, Microsoft, Oracle, Asana, Trello, etc.) but engage the people by demonstrating their part in everything. Technology in and of itself is like a car without gas (or electricity). It may look cool but it has no function. How do you engage people when you are starting a new program? Learn the effective use of the tools, learn the models, the principles, the processes, just don't forget the people.
