About twenty years ago, I was a doctoral candidate at Caltech during an “AI winter,” struggling with basic feature engineering. Today at Salesforce, we're developing autonomous systems that can understand, act, and continuously learn—a fundamental shift from where we began. Our vision extends beyond large language models to Large Action Models—AI systems that don't just process language, but take meaningful actions and improve through environmental feedback. These agents have the ability to make day-to-day business decisions for us, and over time will surely help the human-at-the-helm inform the very trajectory of business as we know it.  I recently discussed this evolution with my favorite futurist @Peter Schwartz at Dreamforce, exploring how we got here and where we're headed. From the early days of neural networks to today's transformer architecture, the acceleration of innovation never ceases to amaze me. What once took decades now happens in months. Instacart is a market leader when it comes to leveraging AI tools to boost productivity at work. I had an amazing conversation with JJ Zhuang, Instacart’s Chief Architect, who has shepherded over 50 AI-driven initiatives to market across the org. Visa founder Dee Hock’s beliefs and work were decades ahead of his time. Amazing to hear his perspective on the impact AI would have as early as 1997 “Within 15 short years, we have created 1000x better algorithms, 500x more computing power per individual, and 500M times more mobility of information. Software to efficiently navigate that immensity of information is rapidly emerging. Soon the entire collective memory of the species will be no more than a few click strokes away. We haven’t begun to understand the significance of this, let alone the societal diversity that will be unleashed, or the institutional change that it will demand. Last month I met with Andy Serwer, Editor at Large at Barron's, for coffee.  As usual, we discussed a wide range of topics, both professional and personal.  While no conversation in Silicon Valley is complete without #AI, I suspect Andy is beginning to tire of it, given the number of tech gurus he meets with every week! However, we did discuss AI’s effect on the #sustainability of technology, an issue we should certainly elevate. Most people assume that existing data centers are entirely based on modern technology. Not so. Over 80 percent of digital information in data centers still sits on spinning mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs). This energy-intensive technology, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, requires enormous amounts of power, cooling, and space, and creates significant e-waste.  What other technologies invented in the 1950s are still around today in their same form?  Pure DirectFlash can save upwards of 20% of existing data center power and space for similar cost.  Why are we not doing this?
