📖 Playbook for Agbiotech Innovators Had an interesting conversation with innovators in the ag biotech space. Here's a gist of the most pressing challenges What's the way to ensure success? How do we up our odds and what are major pitfalls? (Not stating the obvious in the list - pick large globally relevant problems, ensure customer will be willing to pay for the solution etc) ⚗ 1. Innovation mix- Its important to work on multiple levels of innovation. Don't put all your eggs in the "moonshot" basket. Have 1or 2 products that you can commercialize quickly. Being in the market will only increase the odds of success on the "moonshot" product ✅ 2. Regulatory- Understand the regulatory really well, coz it can put a break in your commercialization journey. Have a mix here as well- products with clear regulatory pathway and products that are so novel that regulatory hasn't caught up with it as yet. 🤝 3. Partnerships- Get a commercial partner engagement very early on. They come in with decades of commercialization and market experience. They know what customers want and how to package that well 🛒 4. Know the Difference- Know that technologically successful product is far from a commercially successful product. Be ready to go through the grind of turning a molecule to a block buster product. Understand that requires a significant mind shift. 💰5. Mind the Gap- Plan how will you fund this transition coz there is a big gap in funding between the ideation stage and scale stage. About 75% startups fail to find the means to fund themselves though they have a working prototype. Plan till your first pilot scale manufacturing atleast. Can food processing lead to improved agriculture and a better RoI for farmers? Despite food and grocery being the largest segment in Indian retail, the share of consumer rupee for farmers is least. 🧩Form cluster wise farmer collectives for crops that have processing potential, and market demand. 📞Provide crop advisory that helps value chain partners to achieve better processing output recovery, and improved post processing quality. 🏭Create processing infrastructure either through farmer collectives or MSMEs, that can process all grades of farm output. 🚛Develop cost effective supply chain that fulfils the market linkage requirement for the processing units. Growing horticultural crops with processing potential does help in risk diversification for farmers but the price volatility stays. Actual, sustainable improvement in farm RoI through an overall supportive system is required to reduce price volatility and improve farm incomes. One thing missing in agriculture is #professionalism, something I constantly sense and am slowly learning. However, after meeting Ashwin Surale Sir, I gained a deeper understanding from a new perspective. There is a direct, though invisible, correlation between the pharmacy and agriculture sectors. What I realized anew is how well-presented and efficiently utilized strategies are in the pharmacy segment. It is crucial to understand the distinctions between research, marketing, and sales. Moving forward, it will be important for agriculture corporates to learn from the pharmacy sector in these areas. The agricultural service center business, especially for wholesalers, often feels like a constant rush. Yet Ashwinji, with his global experience in the pharmacy field, has a clear grasp of how to manage this hustle in agriculture more effectively. He is a prime example of how to turn a struggling business into a profitable one. Every individual involved in wholesale agricultural inputs, especially those running Krishi Seva Kendras, should definitely meet Ashwin Sir. Noida-based agritech startup Arya.ag has raised Rs 242.36 crore (approximately $29.2 million) in its latest funding round, which was led by existing investors, including Asia Impact and Quona Capital, through Quona Blue Earth and Accion Quona. The board of Arya.ag has passed a special resolution to issue 53,695 CCPS at an issue price of Rs 45,137 each to raise the aforementioned sum ($29.2 million), Entrackr reported, citing the company's regulatory filing accessed from the RoC. Post-allotment, Arya.ag is valued at approximately Rs 2,700 crore, or $325 million. So far, The startup has raised around $110 million from investors. Founded in 1982 by Prasanna Rao, Arya.ag operates as a grain commerce platform that connects agricultural producers (sellers) with buyers. The startup also provides ancillary services such as warehousing and debt to farmers through third-party lenders. Unlike other startups, Arya.ag is profitable, with its gross scale growing 49.48% year-on-year to Rs 290 crore in FY23. The startup's profit increased elevenfold to Rs 7.58 crore during the same period. Full-Stack Solutions are the Future in Agri-tech? Stellapps Technologies Private Limited, a pioneering Indian dairy-tech startup, recently raised $26 million in Series C funding. The company initially focused on providing IoT solutions to dairy operators, aimed at improving productivity, quality, and traceability. However, they soon realized that standalone IoT solutions were not enough to drive significant scale in India's complex dairy ecosystem. In response, Stellapps pivoted to a full-stack offering, delivering end-to-end digital B2B solutions that are traceable and tailored to the unique needs of FMCG and D2C companies. This shift has proven crucial for delivering more comprehensive value, demonstrating that a holistic approach is essential in agribusiness. Technology alone, without the infrastructure to integrate it seamlessly across the supply chain, may not generate the impact businesses need to thrive. Stellapps' platform now supports over 42,000 villages in India, with plans to expand globally to countries like Morocco and Brazil. With its new funding, the company is focused on scaling operations and anticipates a revenue of ~$42-48 million (INR 350-400 crore) by the end of FY24-25, aiming to break even by September 2025 (company’s revenue for FY23-24 was ~ $37 million (INR 305 crore) and a loss of about $3.9 million (INR 32 crore)). The e-NAM (Electronic National Agriculture Market) is a transformative initiative launched in 2016 to unify Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) across India through a digital trading platform. It has significantly enhanced market transparency by enabling real-time price discovery and reducing transaction costs through the elimination of intermediaries. By providing farmers direct access to buyers nationwide, e-NAM has improved market access and increased competition, leading to better pricing. Moreover, the adoption of paperless transactions has lessened administrative burdens. However, challenges persist, such as limited digital literacy among farmers, inadequate rural infrastructure, and the need for standardized quality assessment mechanisms. Additionally, issues surrounding timely payments and dispute resolution, along with the seamless integration of e-NAM with existing APMC systems, require attention. To maximize its potential, these areas must be addressed to create a more efficient and inclusive market environment for Indian farmers.
