The discussion featured the Vice Minister of Health from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, along with leading specialists, doctors, and entrepreneurs. Two key takeaways from the session were: - AI will significantly improve the efficiency of healthcare systems, companies, and products. - It will reduce the cost of access to healthcare while enhancing longevity and overall wellbeing. One of the most crucial topics we discussed was Data Privacy. 🔐 AI thrives on data—the more, the better for building accurate algorithms. However, there's growing concern about how data is used and protected. The group emphasized the importance of ensuring that data is anonymized to protect individuals, while still allowing AI to drive advancements. Without strong clinician involvement in AI development, we risk missing a lifetime opportunity to create massive value for ourselves, our institutions, and our patients. This was the core message I shared with radiologists at the 2024 Moroccan Medical Expo on Friday👇 The AI development process in radiology and medicine is hungry for clinician expertise and input, yet many clinicians remain spectators. I believe we can do more and take a stronger lead in this transformation. By being more proactive and open to industry and startup collaborations, we can ensure the developed products meet our needs and deliver significant value to the healthcare system and patients. For this to happen, a fresh clinician mindset and setup are required, including: - Open-mindedness toward AI as a disruptive technology, toward startups that are leading AI tool development, and toward new business and industrial partnership models - Investments in our data and IT infrastructures to be ready for AI tool co-development - Robust state and institutional frameworks to enable productive and safe collaboration between healthcare institutions and the industry, especially regarding patient privacy and rights - Protected time for clinicians to collaborate with the industry and startups - Education for clinicians about technology, innovation, and business concepts to facilitate communication with the industry and better drive the AI transformation. This fresh mindset applies beyond radiology and can foster meaningful innovation in every segment of medicine, given the broad impact of AI. Excited for the ALVA10 data team to present their work on how we can make blood based cancer screening (MCED) more palatable for payers, at ISPOR today. In the US and globally, we have rising rates of cancer in younger populations, being driven largely by the obesity epidemic and environmental factors. People born in 1980 are 4X more likely to get cancer than people born in 1950. Colon cancer will be the #1 cause of death in people age 20-49 by 2030, but current guidelines recommend screening start at age 45. Screening rates in the under 55 population are... not good. In the US, that means cancer becomes more of a commercial payer issue every year, yet all the focus is on Medicare. Payers are loathe to pay for additional cancer screening- because their budgets are annual. We can use data, informatics, and genetic information to determine patients who are at elevated risk based on a variety of factors, including genetics, family history, obesity, smoking, and other factors. If we applied blood based cancer screening (sometimes called MCED- multi-cancer early detection) to the population stratified based on risk, instead of age cutoffs that are based on averages, we would 1) detect more relevant cancer earlier, 2) reduce the total cost of cancer care, and 3) improve survival. We know a lot of risk factors that are driving the increased rates of cancer in people under 55. We need to apply that information to screening strategy. Abudhabi’s Mubadla investment company became the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund investor in 2024. In 2024, they deployed $29.2 billion across 52 deals, highlighting their growing influence and strategic investments across various sectors and geographies. Last month, it acquired an 80 per cent stake in Global Medical Supply Chain and Al Ittihad Drug Store from GlobalOne Healthcare Holding, expanding its footprint in healthcare logistics and pharmaceutical distribution.

One of Abu Dhabi’s newest state-backed investment companies is looking at dozens of potential new deals as it plans to build an artificial intelligence-powered healthcare champion that it can expand across the world. M42 Health, which was established through the combination of the healthcare assets of two of Abu Dhabi’s investment firms last year, is eying potential acquisitions and expansions of its operations into Europe, Latin America and Asia, according to chief executive officer Hasan Jasem Al Nowais. “We continue to screen about 50 opportunities on a monthly basis to see what will really complement our strategic plans going forward,” Al Nowais said in an interview in Abu Dhabi. “We have the appetite, and there’s a real hunger for growth.” The comments are the latest sign of the oil-rich emirate’s vast ambitions in industries from technology and life sciences to finance. M42 unveils the next generation of its AI Clinical LLM Med42 M42 Health unveiled #Med42, the next generation of its open-access generative AI Clinical Large Language Model (#LLM), during Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week. #Med42 builds upon the success of its initial launch in October 2023, setting new standards for accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility in #healthcare #AI. The first iteration of #Med42 outperformed industry benchmarks, including OpenAI's GPT3.5 and Google's #MedPaLM models, scoring 72 percent on the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) (USMLE) Sample Exam questions. The second iteration of Med42 is a fully optimized 70-billion parameter finetuned model based on #Llama3, Meta's latest version of open-access #LLMs. Med42's performance in its second iteration rivals that of proprietary models like OpenAI's #GPT4 and Google's #MedGemini, achieving a zero-shot accuracy score of 85.1 percent and a maximum accuracy score of 87.3 percent using specialized prompting on the #USMLE. Dr. Isaac Kohane, a renowned expert in biomedical informatics and a pioneer in integrating electronic health records (EHRs) with artificial intelligence (AI), will be honored at PMWC 2025 (Feb. 5-7). AI for backend, administrative workflows is low-risk and low hanging fruit. AI for direct patient care is higher-risk and needs more thoughtfulness when trying. The closer we get to the patient, the higher the risk, and the more thoughtful (and thus slower) we must be. 2. For clinical care, clinicians are most open to AI as a co-pilot. Similar to having a medical trainee with you at all times, and the physician still has to sign off on things. 3. While various AI co-pilots may enhance patient care and clinician well-being, the data shows many don’t necessarily save time. 4. Autonomous AI agents that own end-to-end clinical care are much further away. Technologists underestimate the clinical complexity of many clinical scenarios, the risk/benefit trade offs are not yet well-studied and the liability implications are unclear. 5. AI medical scribes and drafting patient portal messages are by far the two most common Generative AI use cases being tested and implemented right now. 6. Adoption of AI Scribes by clinicians has been mixed - it’s game changing for some, but it’s not been for everyone. The value isn’t increased patient throughput, but rather improved clinician well-being. 7. Generative AI for drafting patient portal messages also has had mixed results on adoption - also not for everyone. 8. The current AI roadmap is primarily driven by the EHR as lots of the opportunities for improvement are reducing the administrative burdens… created by the EHR in the first place. 9. AI prediction models are only useful if the insights are actionable, fit the clinical workflow, and align with drivers for adoption. Which means many AI models make great research publications but never actually get implemented at scale. 10.
