For decades, Hollywood's attempts to adapt video games for the big screen resulted in "bad movies, trash movies," in the words of one veteran studio executive. But "A Minecraft Movie," along with the Sonic films and the most recent Super Mario blockbuster, shows that Hollywood may have finally cracked it. I spoke to Shuji Utsumi, president and chief executive of Sega America and Europe, who said Hollywood executives used to treat him like he ran a "toy company.” It's different now. “They understand that games are bigger than music and bigger than motion pictures now," he said. "Games are now becoming the culture.”

You are my lifelong friend and a journalist whose work I admire more every day, but the closest I’m ever going to get to any of these movies is your article. Elsewhere, saw Altman’s “Nashville” at The Paris on 58th Street a couple weekends ago. Amazing.

Definitely a polarizing concept. Some are sworn against those movies but it seems like more and more are going to see them. Interesting article Christopher Grimes
