January Jobs Report: A Tighter Labor Market, but Growth Remains Uneven The labor market tightened in January, with 143K jobs added—enough to push unemployment down to 4.0%, even as labor force participation edged up. Prime-age employment rose to 80.7%, nearing its recent peak. Wage growth held steady at 4.1% YoY, reinforcing ongoing competition for talent. 🚀 Where jobs grew: Healthcare and retail, fueled by a resilient consumer benefiting from improved access to credit, home equity borrowing, and real wage gains. ⚠️ Where jobs stalled: Mining, manufacturing, and construction, weighed down by high interest rates and weak investment. Population adjustments and payroll revisions helped clarify the true pace of job growth, narrowing the gap between key employment measures. But with wages still firm and unemployment low, the labor market remains hotter than expected. Looking ahead: Consumer strength is keeping hiring afloat, but high rates continue to drag on investment and production.
