Despite numerous initiatives to increase women’s participation in STEM, retention remains a major challenge. At the Keeping Female in STEM Graduation at Webfala, I had the privilege of joining a panel discussion on strategies to support and retain women in STEM. We explored key solutions, including mentorship, inclusive workplace policies for women, and access to opportunities that help women thrive in the tech space. It was an insightful conversation, and I learned so much from my fellow panelists. I'm glad to be part of this movement to drive lasting change for women in STEM. This is my first post of the year, but trust me, one of my personal development goals for 2025 is to speak more, let my voice be heard, and show up for public speaking opportunities. Unpacking STEM Careers: Women in Science – Closing the Gender Gap Did you know that despite making up nearly 50% of the global population, women hold less than 30% of STEM jobs? The gender gap in science isn't just a statistic—it’s a missed opportunity for innovation, diversity, and progress. As a woman passionate about STEM and committed to driving change, I was inspired by the UNESCO initiative to unpack the barriers women face in STEM careers. From early education to leadership roles, the obstacles are real—but so is the potential to break them down. As women, it is in our hands to close the gap in STEM. A change that needs to be created at the foundational level of education. That’s why me and my peers from Claremont McKenna College participated at UNESCO to drive innovation and change. So how do we close the gap? Mentorship, visibility, access- and following your passion, no matter the obstacles. - Mentorship: Representation matters. Having role models and sponsors in STEM helps young women see the path forward. - Visibility: Amplifying the achievements of women in STEM shatters stereotypes and redefines who belongs in science. - Access: From scholarships to equitable hiring practices, ensuring fair opportunities is key to unlocking untapped potential. My passion sparked hearing the brilliant voices of Melonie Parker, Ayumi Moore Aoki , and Malu Junco ! The future of science depends on diverse minds solving global challenges. Women in STEM? We 👏 love 👏 to 👏 see 👏 it! Kristian and Emily (civil engineering 2020, both) met through a “Freshman Initiative Group,” or FIG, that the Women in Engineering Program organized. They bonded over the initial shock of college, especially the challenges of being on their own for the first time and, of course, the heavy workload. (We’ve all been there!) They took many classes together over the next few years. They spent countless hours studying late into the night and drinking endless coffee to get them through the rigorous coursework. On this year’s International Day of Girls and Women in Science, #Afretec, in partnership with the Rwandan Association for Women in Science and Engineering (RAWISE), hosted a two-day forum to promote gender inclusion in STEM. The first day featured partner institutions sharing best practices and developing action plans to advance gender equity within and beyond their institutions. On the second day, high school girls attended a mentorship session where women in #STEM shared their career journeys and proudest achievements. The event concluded with a gala dinner honoring five Afretec partner members with the inaugural Afretec Inclusion Champion Awards for their commitment to inclusive excellence in STEM.
