  • On June 11, 2024, we organized a breakfast with Secretary-General of The ASEAN Secretariat, H.E. DR. KAO KIM HOURN, in addition to the rest of the ASEAN Delegation, sponsored by USAID & U.S. Department of State. Dr. Kao emphasized the importance of people-to-people ties to strengthen U.S.-ASEAN relations as well as youth engagement. Our members discussed a variety of topics regarding the US-Southeast Asia relationship including: • the status of the Southeast Asian Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANFWZ) • global health, climate change, and economic development • AI/Technology • US-China Great Power Competition and it’s impact on Southeast Asia • the need of cooperation for Myanmar A big shout out to all of our wonderful members for attending and a great discussion!   • 2025 Southeast Asia Program: In fall 2025, Eisenhower Fellowships will assemble an accomplished group of 20-25 outstanding leaders from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and invite them to the United States for a unique nearly six-week program with both in-person and virtual components. Fellows will develop a project, foster professional relationships and launch dynamic, concrete collaborations with their American counterparts, their cohort and the prestigious EF network of over 2500 Fellows from 115 countries.   • The US-China Education Trust, in cooperation with Tsinghua University and DC-area schools, is launching the Spring 2025 Common Ground project to advance our mission of bringing American and Chinese students together. Students will work on areas where US-China cooperation is urgently needed in an era of competition and tension between the two countries. All activities will be conducted virtually and in English. Students Finding Common Ground— Experiential Projects for US-China Gen Z Students follows the successful example set by last year’s inaugural Common Ground projects. Students chosen through a competitive process, half enrolled in Chinese universities and half in American universities, will form groups focusing on a separate topic area: 1) Climate Change and Environment, 2) Peace & Conflict Resolution 3) Education; and 4) Public Health. Applications are open to all undergraduate students in the DC-area with a demonstrated interest in US-China relations and a readiness to work alongside Tsinghua University students.   • The Southeast Asia Program (SEAP) at Cornell University invites applications for two separate two-year Postdoctoral Associate appointments, each awarded for the two-year period beginning between July 1 and September 1, 2025. Each position offers a stipend of $62,000-$65,000/year, depending on candidate experience. Candidates should apply for only one of these two positions, and will not be considered for both. The deadline for both postdoctoral appointments is January 15, 2025. For the purposes of these postdoctoral appointments, SEAP considers the countries of Southeast Asia to include Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, East Timor, and Singapore. The most competitive candidates will have proficiency in one (or more) Southeast Asian language(s) and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary contexts.   • **Harvard Southeast Asian Studies Graduate Symposium 2025** Call for Papers We are pleased to announce the Harvard Southeast Asia Studies Graduate Student Symposium on April 4-5, 2025. The symposium will be hosted at Harvard University and will feature symposium panels, workshops, and a keynote lecture by Thongchai Winichakul, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Format: The symposium format is designed to be a platform for exchange, with panels featuring short paper presentations, followed by structured discussions among panelists and the audience. Modality: The symposium will be conducted in person, with limited travel subsidies available for both domestic and international participants. Subsidies will be based on need and region and are not guaranteed. East Coast: $150; Midwest: $250, West Coast: $400, Europe: $500, Southeast Asia/Other Regions: $600-$800.   • Association for Asian Studies – Gosling Lim Fellowship Proposal Submission Deadline: February 3, 2025, 5:00 PM (Eastern Time) This fellowship is focused on capability-building in Southeast Asian Studies among scholars who are Southeast Asian nationals based in Southeast Asia and at Southeast Asian institutions. Its goal is to enable such scholars to concentrate on publishing their dissertation research, and/or embark on new post-dissertation research, without the distraction of having to teach, consult, or shoulder administrative burdens, and with the opportunity to expand their scholarly networks and expertise. The intent is that fellowship recipients will develop their careers in Southeast Asia, helping to advance the field of Southeast Asian Studies within the region. The fellowship provides US$55,000 of funding for postdoctoral research and writing, to be expended over 10-12 months, beginning on September 1, 2025, while the recipient is in residence or otherwise based at an academic institution, in Southeast Asia or abroad, other than their home institution and the institution at which their doctorate was obtained. The fellowship may be used in any discipline and for any country of Southeast Asia (i.e., Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam).
