Updates

  • Allied impact: The USCG Cutter Valiant offloaded drugs in Miami last week after U.S. Coast Guard, Netherlands Navy & Royal Canadian Navy forces combined for six interdictions & the seizure of 12,000 pounds of cocaine worth $141M in the Caribbean Sea. The busts are another example of the persistent presence of allies to support efforts to reduce the flow of illicit drugs in the Caribbean.

  • Presence, Partnership and Resolve: Demonstrating a commitment to maritime security in the Caribbean, three warships and one aircraft from three allied nations conducted a passing exercise (PASSEX) March 3 designed to increase interoperability and enhance capability. In the photo, the United Kingdom Royal Navy River-class offshore patrol vessel HMS Medway (P 223) steams alongside Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116) as a NH-90 Neptune helicopter assigned to Royal Netherlands Navy Holland-class offshore patrol vessel HNLMS Groningen (P843) flies in the distance while conducting trilateral operations in the Caribbean Sea, March 3, 2025. • In Panama today, SOUTHCOM Commander Adm. Alvin Holsey met with Panama's Minister of Security Frank Ábrego and Minister of Foreign Affairs Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez to discuss the U.S.-Panama security partnership and regional security challenges. Holsey also met with Panama Canal Administrator, Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, to discuss the strategic importance of the Canal and areas of mutual cooperation. The two leaders signed a "Cyber Cooperation Arrangement" between SOUTHCOM and the Panama Canal Authority to identify areas for enhanced bilateral cyber cooperation, including information sharing, training and institutional development, to strengthen cyber and maritime security of the Panama Canal. Panama is one of the United States’ most important strategic allies and remains one of its strongest partners in the region. The United States’ longstanding partnership with Panama is built on an enduring commitment to democratic principles.
