Head of Bank Sales at Unit

Over the last 18 years as a community bank leader and CEO, I’ve seen banking evolve from traditional, branch-driven operations toward digital-first customer experiences. The playing field is changing faster than many bank leaders realize or want to acknowledge.  I heard it for the last several years - “these kids just care about their phones, how do we reach them anymore?” As it turns out, it isn’t just the kids - it’s every generation, consumer and business. It’s a challenge that calls for improved digital offerings – and community bank core software doesn’t cut it.  The banks that outperform will not only make significant investments in digital, but they will participate in the next big shift - embedded finance, which is changing the way consumers and businesses engage with financial services.  But many bank leaders are asking: • Why should banks care about embedded finance? • What’s in it for you? • What are the risks of participating in embedded finance? • How does high quality technology help mitigate risk? These questions require nuanced answers, but from my perspective I see a massive opportunity for banks that successfully engage with high quality tech. I joined Unit because I realized that our platform can not only provide a standalone, white labeled digital app and card program for community banks, but also give banks access to the rapidly growing embedded finance marketplace.  Banks using Unit’s technology infrastructure and partnering with technology companies have generated over $1.3 billion in deposits and processed $38 billion in transactions in 2024, and these numbers are growing every month.      To help answer these questions, Amanda Swoverland (Unit’s Chief Compliance Officer) and I are launching a LinkedIn series. Amanda is a former Chief Risk Officer at a community bank, as well as a regulator and consultant, and joined Unit as employee #4 to help build the company from its earliest days. Amanda is an incredible banker and compliance professional who has earned a  great deal of respect for how she helps our banks succeed. In this series, we’ll discuss why banks should consider embedded finance, how they can do it safely, and how the current economic climate impacts these decisions. We’ll get into specifics on many of the key issues in entering the embedded space, which are largely grounded in compliance and BSA/AML/OFAC – and we’ll be roping in some of our other talented Unit team members to weigh in. Banks are certainly facing new challenges—declining deposit growth, pressure on fee income, and increasing regulatory scrutiny. At the same time, tech company partnerships can create massive opportunities—but only if done right and in line with regulatory expectations. I look forward to diving in!
