I enjoyed speaking at the annual United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) webinar about nature investing. 3 takeaways to keep in mind for 2025: 💸 The green, social and sustainable bond market is valued at a cumulative $5.5 trillion as of December 31st, 2024. $1 trillion of it are issuances from 2024. In comparison, the voluntary carbon credit market is at a cumulative $10.8 billion (as of Dec 31st, 2023) and about $3.6 billion are for NBS projects. We expect new activity for green bonds in 2025. 📉 The perils of mismanaging nature risk are real and sting. BloombergNEF released 10 case studies on mismanaged nature risks which resulted in up to $10 billion costs per situation. The companies listed are 3M, AAK, Bernard Matthews, Chevron, CMA CGM, Formosa Plastics Corporation, U.S.A., Freeport-McMoRan, JBS, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Tesla. 🤖 AI for nature finance keeps making strides in biodiversity monitoring, earth observation, nature risks modeling, carbon measurement and reporting. Are these "tariff wars" an accidental Trojan Horse to lower global CO2 emissions and localize our economies? 3 reasons why this can happen: 1/ Less global shipping = a dent into 15% of global CO2 emissions 21% of global emissions come from transportation. 73% of that is related to trade. It would be nice to make a dent straight into 15% of global CO2 emissions. 2/ Less global shipping = less depletion of natural resources Brazil exports 85% of its locally farmed soybeans. What's the state with the highest national production of soybeans? Mato Grosso, 27% of total. Mato Grosso also happens to be the state where the Amazon jungle’s deforestation is by far the most intense, driven by the expansion of industrial soybeans farming. 3/ Less global shipping = more local accountability “Out of sight, out of mind.” It’s easy not to think about the environmental cost of what we consume when the damage happens thousands of miles away. But when it happens in our own backyard, we can't ignore it. Localized economies force us to take responsibility for what we produce and consume. This isn’t to say there won't be issues with it. Such as inflation, market shocks, geopolitical tensions. However - when it comes to the unintended consequences of measures like these tariffs, there's lead to be turned into gold.
