We help children heal, grow, and thrive. To become the amazing people they were born to be.

About us

Visit our link tree to find our event registration links! https://linktr.ee/thechildrenscenterwaynecounty OUR ROOTS We were born from the compassionate vision and dream of Senator James Couzens. Following the great stock market crash of 1929, record numbers of children were abandoned, suffering hopelessly with a seemingly bleak future. James Couzens chose not to look away, but to look deeper. He inspired other leaders to do the same. Those who saw children not as they were, but for what they could become. Almost a century later, James Couzens’ vision has become a movement shared by many who are joined in a common resolve. A resolve to make life work for children, so they may grow into the amazing people they were born to be, regardless of their circumstances, mental health, or behavioral challenges. Here’s to the possibility that life can not only work for children — but that children can dream again. BRAND PROMISE Helping children dream again. MISSION We put children and families at the center of all we do. We strive to help them shape their own futures, and carve out a path that’s brighter than even they imagine. BELIEFS • We believe in treating and healing the whole child and family. • We believe in advancing care through the use of evidence-based treatments. • We believe in respecting our children’s struggles and advocating for their rights. • And most of all, we believe in building bigger dreams and brighter futures.

  • We were excited to conclude Black History Month by honoring one of our esteemed community and corporate partners, Detroit Chassis LLC! Not only did Detroit Chassis celebrate 25 years in business, but they also marked 25 years of Black Excellence through community investment, leadership, and internship opportunities. We are incredibly thankful for their ongoing partnership with our agency, as they consistently make a positive impact in the lives of children and families through volunteer efforts, sponsorships, and beyond!

  • Our first Real-Life Learning Session was a success! One of our clients had the chance to partake in a session while working closely with their clinician to prepare Mac and Cheese. During this experience, the client developed their kitchen skills by learning how to use measuring cups, wash dishes, and operate the stove for the very first time! The client shared that this experience was a 10 out of 10. We are thrilled to kick this program off and look forward to future sessions that will engage children and provide hands-on opportunities to develop their skills, confidence, and independence, all aimed at improving their real-life outcomes.

  • The ongoing celebration of Black History Month at The Children’s Center is truly special! Two of our amazing staff members, Mr. Earl and Mr. Curtis Hairston, led a discussion focused on their very own family histories. In 1999, their family published a book titled "The Hairstons," which delves into their family's history and the slave owner family of their ancestors. They generously gifted a free copy of their book to the first 12 attendees of the event. The discussion not only educated but also inspired everyone present to continue exploring and talking about history. Many attendees left the event with a newfound appreciation for their own roots and a desire to preserve their own stories for future generations. Thank you, Mr. Earl and Mr. Curtis for sharing your history with us!

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the passionate individuals and organizations dedicated to making a tangible difference in the lives of Detroit's youth.
