    Why do people say they want something… but often don’t act accordingly? Enter Cognitive Dissonance – the psychological stress we feel when our actions don’t match our identity. Example: 🧍John says, “I’m a fit person.” 📆 But when he checks his workout log, he realizes he’s only been to the gym once this month. At this point, John has three options: 1️⃣ Change his behavior → Start going to the gym consistently. 2️⃣ Change his belief → Admit that fitness is not a priority right now. 3️⃣ Make excuses → Blame work stress, the weather, etc. Coaching Tip: Help clients recognize dissonance and choose Option 1—aligning their behavior with the person they want to be.     The key to long-term success! Outcomes are what you get. Processes are what you do. Identity is what you believe. Most people try to change habits by focusing on outcomes: 🚫 “I want to lose weight.” 🚫 “I want to eat healthier.” But real, lasting change comes from identity-based habits: ✅ “I am a healthy person.” ✅ “I am someone who takes care of my body.” Coaching Shift: The person who says, "I’m trying to quit sugar,” still identifies as someone who eats sugar. But the person who says, "I don’t eat processed sugar," has already shifted their identity. Help clients focus on who they are becoming rather than just what they want to achieve. The truth is, it's not about time—it’s about reps! “Neurons that fire together, wire together.” The more you repeat an action, the faster and stronger a habit will form. Coaching Tip: Want clients to form habits faster? Increase the number of reps. 👉🏼 A habit done daily forms faster than one done weekly. 👉🏼 The more repetitions in the same context, the quicker it becomes automatic. Think of brushing your teeth—it didn’t take 21 days, it took twice a day for years.     The people with the strongest willpower use it the least! Instead of constantly fighting temptations, they design their environments to make good decisions just their automatic default actions. For example: ✅ Gainsy – Removes junk food from her home so she doesn’t have to “resist” it. ❌ Failsy – Keeps snacks around and tries to “be strong.” ✅ Gainsy – Sets her workout clothes next to her bed to make morning workouts easier. ❌ Failsy – Waits until she “feels motivated” to hit the gym. Coaching Shift: Instead of telling clients to “try better next time,” help them design an environment that removes friction for good habits and increases friction for bad ones.     Want to build better habits? Stop relying on willpower—change your environment instead. Behavior = Person + Situation (Lewin’s Equation) Same person, different situation = different behavior. For example: You crave popcorn at the movies, but not at home watching Netflix. You reach for a candy bar at checkout but wouldn’t go out of your way to buy one otherwise. Your environment shapes your habits more than you think! If you want clients to build lasting habits, help them: ✔ Pair new habits with stable contexts (e.g., drinking water every morning after brushing teeth). ✔ Remove bad activators (e.g., keeping junk food out of sight). ✔ Make good behaviors the default (e.g., pre-prepping meals every Sunday evening so they’re easy to grab throughout the week).
