I'm both looking forward to hosting this WACL (Women in Advertising & Communications Leadership ) panel at MAD//FESTNorth next week - and feeling rather fired up! Our panel comes at a time which feels, well, existential and demonstrates how the work we do at WACL has never been more vital to drive for gender equality. Set against a backdrop of a world where Diversity Equity and Inclusion is under threat not just of going backwards but disappearing completely with roll-backs and “sunsetting” of years of work - we need advertising more than ever as a beacon of positive representation. Yet this isn’t just an ethical or moral imperative – it’s also got a clear business case. With recent Unstereotype Alliance research showing inclusive advertising drives both sales and brand equity. The Girls Spot women’s only gym has landed in South West London🎉 Here’s my journey to raising £100,000+ 👀 Every single Investor said NO or left me out to dry. I went to endless networking events, sent daily cold emails and got countless rejections. Trying to raise money from investors is not for the faint-hearted. So I took matters into my own hands. - Gymshark → £20k donation - My online community → £2,725 fundraiser - Selling digital products → £45k I then decided to become my own investor and invest £50,000 from my job as a full-time social media influencer! So why am I opening a women’s only gym? * 71% of women are being harassed in the gym on a regular basis. * A recent survey by Run Repeat found that 70% of women have experienced some form of unwanted attention while working out in mixed-gender gyms * 79% of women said they’d transfer to an all women’s gym to avoid sexual harassment. These are alarming statistics, and there’s more. So today we are one step closer to tackling the issues women’s face in mixed gyms. Watch the space. We're FAILING women by not discussing the Gender Pension Gap - PLEASE KEEP READING!!! According to one provider, the average UK pension pot for men over 50 is £84,205 vs just £39,654 for women of the same age 🤯 Why? 💰Part time work = Part time pension In the UK, women are disproportionately responsible for childcare and caring for elderly family members. Yet, Standard Life UK estimate that for someone earning £25,000 a year, switching from full-time work to working part-time 3 days a week could lead to £58,000 less in retirement, ouch. ⏳ Time makes money more than money makes money If you contribute less to your pension in the middle of your career, you’re also reducing the benefit that compound interest and long-term investments can have on your savings. As an industry we talk about how more needs to be done to retain female talent, so we don’t miss out on their experience and knowledge. BUT there is also an imperative to better support women as they decide their working patterns, so they can be more informed about the potential impact on their financial future. Virginia Barnes is not advocating everyone must work full time their whole career. Every woman needs to figure out the working pattern than works best for them and the people they love. But when weighing up your options, please don’t just think about the short-term horizon. Consider your pension and longer-term financial position too...
