We had the opportunity to visit the Petcare Innovation Summit in Berlin and were very impressed by all the insightful discussions on and off stage. The personal highlight for The Better Cat was, of course, our founder Niklas Köster participating in the 'Digging Your Claws into the Cat Market' panel yesterday. 🏠 The Petcare Innovation Summit almost seemed like a homecoming for The Better Cat this year. 😻 Last year, we attended the summit as a spectator and it very quickly became clear - cats is where the future lies. 💥 This year, as I dug into the opportunities offered by the cats space on a panel with Kirsty from JamJar Investments and Faith from KatKin, I realised that the industry has taken a leap forward in its perception of cats and the issues faced by them. 1️⃣ There’s still very few out there who actually truly understand the nature of cats and cat customers well enough to build products that matter to them. This also reflects in the fact that most folks who started out with our vision are already selling dog products right now rather than scaling the cats’ business. The opportunity to disrupt still remains as ripe as always. 2️⃣ Noticeable also was a need to go beyond simply junk-freefood. There’s a shift in demand towards more health focused, functional nutrition from premium brands - both by consumers as well as investors. The cat-human bond ❤️ is still paramount and people are willing to spend significantly more on products that help their cats live a longer life and avoid long-running health issues. 3️⃣ While maintaining laser focus on online sales’ channels for D2C brands is still the norm for early stage companies, it has become almost a requirement to show certain proof points on the non-shopify side of things in order to truly prove the capability of the brand to eventually own a category. As Maks, Rachit and I return home, we feel like we’re in a stronger position than ever to disrupt the space. Our investment into truly understanding fundamental cat-requirements (as cat-owners ourselves) has resulted in us creating products that are resonating with cat-parents in a completely different way than most other junk-free brands. Shout out to Poppy and Kisaco Research for organising yet another great conference. It was an absolute pleasure to catch up with so many fellow founders and partners from the ecosystem!
