TOMORROW: We’re inviting legislators, leg staff, and community members to join us on December 5th at 12-1 pm PT on Zoom to hear from speakers like Hannah Holloway about how AI and tech-enabled tenant screening are changing the rental market and harming tenants—and what policy solutions we can build to address it. Hannah is the VP of Housing Programs at TechEquity. She led our original research into how landlords use automated tenant screening tech to screen renters in California. Register now to hear from Hannah and our other speaker: https://ow.ly/69UW50Ul4nU

In Massachusetts, the AI screening tool company SafeRent has to pay around $2.3 million to residents with housing vouchers as part of a class action settlement. They will also no longer display a tenant screening score for applicants using housing vouchers nationwide. The Verge https://lnkd.in/d_W6VnQz

Last month, the Color of Surveillance Conference brought together a powerful group of people working to challenge the surveillance that underpins so much of digital technology. Our Senior VP of Labor Programs Tim Newman was in attendance. This is what he had to say about their experience: “This year's conference also highlighted the importance of resistance, including how the tech industry impacts people globally involved in the data work behind AI systems—and how workers are organizing to improve conditions in the industry. Gatherings like this one that 'put racial and economic justice at the center of conversations about digital era surveillance' will help inspire our work in the year to come.” Want to learn more? AI is currently making decisions that impact every facet of people’s lives, from workplaces to hospitals to homes. Despite this, Automated Decision-Making Technologies often operate as a black box with no way for impacted people to understand, change, or protest the algorithm’s results. It’s simple: the tech that is automating human decisions needs to be guided by the humans about whom these decisions are being made. That’s why last month, our SVP of Programs, Labor Tim Newman, gave comment to the California Privacy Protection Agency on draft rulemaking about ADMTs. Two large private-equity-backed landlords are in hot water in Indiana for alleged discrimination via tenant screening systems. This follows complaints from current tenants about junk fees, reduced property maintenance, and frequent evictions. https://lnkd.in/g7Z-izJ5

We know that Automated Decision-Making Technologies (ADMTs), though already widely deployed across sectors, can be rife with bias and hard-coded discrimination. We also know that this tech often operates as a black box with no way for impacted people to understand, change, or protest the algorithm’s results. That’s why last month, our SVP of Programs, Labor Tim Newman, gave comment to the California Privacy Protection Agency on draft rulemaking about ADMTs.
