Mission controllers at the Space Telescope Science Institute connect with #Webb at least 2-3 times per 24 hours. They work with planners as well as schedulers at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory & the DSN complexes to plan communications months in advance, since many other observatories also use the DSN. #NASA #JWST #NASAWebb

Expanding the frontiers of space astronomy. We help humanity explore the universe.
About us
We are the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. We help humanity explore the universe with advanced space telescopes and ever-growing data archives. Established in 1981, we have helped guide the most famous observatory in history, the Hubble Space Telescope. Since its launch in 1990, we have performed the science operations for Hubble. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which launched on December 25, 2021. We will perform parts of the science operations for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, in formulation for launch in late 2026, and we are partners on several other NASA missions. Our staff conducts world-class scientific research; our Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) curates and disseminates data from over 20 astronomical missions; and we bring science to the world through internationally recognized news, education, and public outreach programs. We value our diverse workforce and civility in the workplace, and seek to be an example for others to follow. OUR STRATEGIC GOALS • Excel in the science operations of NASA's current and future astrophysics flagship missions. • Advance state-of-the-art astronomical research, archives, and tools for scientific discovery. • Make the world's astronomical information accessible to all. • Promote an inclusive, equitable workplace and cultivate a diverse, engaged workforce.

Patricia Molinari interned at STScI through our Space Astronomy Summer Program, where she worked on a project to promote the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope in collaboration with our Office of Public Outreach.
Thank you everyone who came and visited my iPoster! I had a lovely time talking with everyone and explaining my work from STScI. Happy #AAS245!

Jacqueline Sanchez (Calderon) was our SASP intern for year 2024, and we are incredibly proud of the accomplishments of all our SASP interns.
One week ago, I had the incredible opportunity to attend my first American Astronomical Society (AAS) meeting, where I presented the astrophysics research I’ve been conducting since Summer 2024. I’m grateful to everyone who visited my poster and engaged with my work, as well as to the National Astronomy Consortium (NAC) for making this milestone possible.

This time-lapse video using data from the James Webb Space Telescope highlights the evolution of one light echo in the vicinity of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. A light echo is created when a star explodes or erupts, flashing light into...

The largest photomosaic of the Andromeda galaxy, assembled from Hubble observations, has been unveiled. It took more than 10 years to collect data for this colorful portrait of our neighboring galaxy and was created from more than 600 snapshots: https://bit.ly/405MsbK #AAS245

Dwarf galaxy Leo P—the clustering of blue stars at lower right—has an oddball history. After an early burst of star formation, its star production shut down. But unlike most dwarf galaxies, star formation reignited and continues today: https://bit.ly/4j6OgIQ #AAS245

This image of VV 191 is a composite of near-infrared light from #NASAWebb, and ultraviolet and visible light from Hubble. It is one of nearly 2,000 pairs identified by citizen science volunteers to help researchers study galactic dust: https://bit.ly/4ilIMtv

Today, we reflect on the enduring impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of equality, justice, and progress. As we explore the universe through the lens of the #Hubble & #NASAWebb Space Telescope, we are reminded that science, like society, thrives when diverse perspectives come together in pursuit of a greater understanding. At the Space Telescope Science Institute, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where innovation, curiosity, and teamwork can flourish. Let us honor Dr. King’s legacy by continuing to break barriers in space exploration, while also working to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. #MLKDay #DiversityInSTEM #SpaceExploration #Inclusion #STScI
