How High Should Drones Fly? Public safety agencies are scaling Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs, but one question keeps coming up: Should drones fly at 200 or 400 feet? The right answer? Both. Altitude capability is essential—lower altitudes provide close-range visibility and precise navigation, while higher altitudes offer broad situational awareness and extended operational reach. The best DFR programs adapt seamlessly. With Axon Air DFR, agencies gain the altitude capability needed to handle any mission. ✅ Fly at 200 feet for shielded operations in urban environments ✅ Fly at 400 feet for extended beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) coverage and greater oversight ✅ Integrate real-time intelligence with Axon Air DFR The future of real-time public safety operations is here. Learn how agencies like New York City Police Department, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Campbell Police Department and Oklahoma City Police Department are redefining what’s possible with DFR programs. Director of Product Marketing, Docks and Remote Operations @Skydio

We recently supported a bridge inspection with the Skydio X10. The team captured detailed images of a 1300-ft span, its reinforced concrete piers, and the entire under deck—all while operating in areas where the GPS signal was frequently lost. This is precisely the kind of challenge where traditional drones would falter, but the X10 thrived. Here’s how: 1️⃣ Skydio’s Autonomy™ engine: X10’s AI-powered flight system builds a detailed 360-degree view of the drone’s surroundings using multiple onboard cameras and sensors. By processing visual and inertial data in real-time, the X10 autonomously navigates intricate environments, maintaining stable flight and avoiding obstacles—without relying on GPS. 2️⃣ Visual Positioning System (VPS): This technology allows the X10 to maintain situational awareness in GPS-denied spaces. By continuously analyzing textures, patterns, and landmarks while integrating inertial measurements, VPS builds an enduring understanding of the operational area to ensure the drone operates uninterrupted, even when GPS is blocked or unavailable. These capabilities deliver real value. The X10 completed the entire job in just one day with two inspectors, a task that previously took our customer 3–4 days with four inspectors, and also required lane closures and a snooper truck. And the inspection team reported that X10 gave them higher-quality data than the expensive method would have provided. Skydio’s technology continues to redefine what’s possible for infrastructure inspections. Whether you’re flying hand-launched missions or remotely piloting the X10 from a Skydio Dock, we empower teams to work smarter, safer, and more efficiently. If you’re tackling complex inspections or need to operate in GPS-denied environments, let’s connect—I’d love to share how Skydio can transform your operations.
