  • Thanks for making history with us, Elizabeth City! The new Sentara Albemarle Medical Center is officially open to all patients at 3050 Halstead Boulevard Extended. Take a look at some scenes from this morning as hospital care teams worked seamlessly with local emergency services to transfer more than 50 patients from the old hospital to the brand new $278 million medical facility. Our first patient to enter the new hospital, Jewell Forbes, was all smiles as she received a bouquet of flowers. Hospital president Teresa Watson will be hand-delivering flowers to all patients as they settle into their new rooms today. We also welcomed the first newborn to enter the new hospital, little Jayon. He was the last baby born at the old hospital and one of the first patients to transfer to the new hospital. Not even a day old and he's already making history! "After 65 years of service, the old SAMC is now officially closed," announced over the hospital intercom speakers as the final caregivers in the building erupted in cheers. Read more about our new health campus in the comments. #SentaraProud #ImprovingHealth

  • Back-to-school prep means more than pencils and paper - wellness exams should be a top priority. Sentara pediatrician Dr. Hyeon Choi shares insights on how annual physicals help assess growth, development, and screen for concerns like learning disorders or ADHD. For middle and high school students, these visits also open important conversations around safety and wellness. With Virginia’s updated sports physical now valid for 14 months, now is the time to plan ahead. 📹 Watch for guidance on preparing for a healthy, confident school year. #BackToSchool #PediatricCare #SentaraCares

  • We are excited to announce a major milestone in our growing relationship with Virginia Wesleyan University, aimed at expanding and strengthening health sciences education. Sentara Health and Virginia Wesleyan University have both formally signed initial agreements marking the first steps in transitioning Sentara College of Health Sciences (SCOHS) into a professional college within Virginia Wesleyan University. Beginning January 1, 2026, SCOHS will be operated as the Sentara College of Health Sciences of Virginia Wesleyan University, a professional college within VWU’s academic structure, housing all existing degree and certificate programs. “Our shared vision is to prepare the healthcare workforce of the future while honoring Sentara College’s deep community ties and proud academic legacy,” said Dr. Angela Taylor, president, Sentara College of Health Sciences. Both institutions are now focused on the key steps necessary to ensure a smooth and successful transition, including required regulatory and accreditation processes. Key details of the transition plans include: • Through Summer 2026, all current students will complete their programs and courses of study under the Sentara College of Health Sciences name. Starting in Fall 2026, students will receive their credentials from the Sentara College of Health Sciences of Virginia Wesleyan University. • For current SCOHS students, there will be no changes to out-of-pocket costs, courses of study, or graduation timelines. • The existing SCOHS campus and facilities will continue to be used, supporting continuity for students, faculty, and staff while preparations are being made to transition all programs to the VWU campus. Over the coming months, efforts will focus on solidifying SCOHS’s permanent integration into WVU, with both institutions committed to minimizing disruption and ensuring continuity for students, faculty, and staff throughout the transition. • A flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol and a key to Elizabeth City are two tokens of appreciation Sentara leaders received at a celebratory ceremony on the new Sentara Albemarle Medical Center campus. Dennis Matheis, chief executive officer of Sentara, and Teresa Watson, president of Sentara Albemarle Medical Center were joined by local partners, Sentara colleagues, and construction teams to celebrate the four-year, $278M campus project to replace the current 65-year-old Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. Before each guest toured the new hospital, they received a rose, which paid homage to a local tradition, the Rose Buddies legacy. In the 1980s, two friends in Elizabeth City extended a hand and a fresh flower to visitors who arrived by boat. Just as the Rose Buddies greet every guest with a rose, the new Sentara Albemarle Medical Center campus opened its doors with the same spirit of care and compassion. We’re proud to grow health and hospitality, right here at home. We look forward to officially opening the new hospitals to patients this Friday, August 8.

  • Greg has been hospitalized for a few weeks at Sentara RMH Medical Center and hoped to be out of the hospital by his birthday. While he’s not quite there yet, his care team made sure he still felt celebrated. 🎉 They helped him get "outside of the hospital" on his special day to enjoy some fresh air and surprised him with a decorated room and thoughtful gifts. Join us in wishing Greg a very happy birthday and a smooth, speedy recovery! #SentaraCares #PatientCare #HappyBirthday

  • On National Intern Day, we’re proud to highlight the contributions of 20 interns across Sentara Health who have spent the summer making a difference — and gaining experience in health sciences, business, finance, IT, supply chain, and more. Whether helping improve the patient experience at Sentara Leigh Hospital or training future nurses at our Clinical Education & Simulation Center, these students have already left their mark. We’ve loved getting to know interns like: • Rylie Winston, a Health Services Administration student at JMU, helped improve patient experience at Sentara Leigh Hospital. • Gunni Kamran, a UVA Systems Engineering student, who helped streamline contract management processes. • Hanna Smith, a student from JMU, spent the summer at our Clinical Education & Simulation Center, training future nurses. • Alana Galbert and Alana Ibiezugbe, health science and kinesiology majors, played key roles in our health equity, diversity & inclusion team, supporting the Sentara Health Career Camps. Thank you to all of our interns — your impact will last long after summer ends. 💼🌟 #NationalInternDay #NationalInternDay #InternshipExperience #SentaraProud#FutureLeaders #HealthcareCareers
