ScionHealth Gives, our company’s community grant program, recently awarded more than $100,000 in grants to several not-for-profit organizations providing important services in communities where our team members live and work. Each of the organizations were nominated for the grants by ScionHealth team members across the country. Read more about it below.

For the second year in a row, ScionHealth’s Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Southeast Arizona has been named a recipient of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association’s Patient Safety and Quality Award. Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Southeast Arizona was honored for its submission, “Zero Harm: Our Journey to High Reliability,” which outlined new process improvements by the hospital to reduce falls, infections and other forms of inpatient harm while heightening the staff’s awareness of safety issues. Their efforts occurred in conjunction with the implementation of ScionHealth’s National Quality Strategy.   “‘First, do no harm,’ is the most fundamental principle for any healthcare organization, and this award from AzHHA is a testament to our hospital staff’s dedication to that principle and to keeping our patients’ safety top of mind in everything we do,” Cornerstone Southeast Arizona CEO Ritche Berdal said. “This journey of increasing awareness of patient safety, building a speak-up culture, and having a zero-harm attitude puts me at ease knowing that I can trust my team to be safe.”   Congrats to the Cornerstone team in Tucson on this well-deserved honor, and we thank them for their commitment to high-quality care and a culture of continuous improvement.

The Subacute Units (SAUs) at Kindred Hospital Brea, Kindred Hospital Greensboro and Kindred Hospital South Florida – Hollywood all recently received top ratings in U.S. News & World Report’s assessment of 2025 Best Nursing Homes. The Brea SAU was recognized as “High Performing” in both Short-Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care. Greensboro and Hollywood were each rated “High Performing” in Short-Term Rehabilitation. Our Subacute Units are located inside Kindred Hospital buildings but operate independently of the long-term acute care hospitals while serving their own patient/resident populations. Subacute care is specially designed to provide short-term inpatient rehabilitation for those who are recovering from an injury or illness or to provide compassionate inpatient care to those facing multiple medical problems or illnesses for a longer period of time.    “Our SAU caregivers work hard every day to provide excellent inpatient medical care and rehabilitation services to members of their communities in a safe, comfortable, caring environment,” said Kim Gibbs BSN, RN, LNHA, ScionHealth Senior Director of Operations for Subacute Units. “This recognition by U.S. News demonstrates the high quality of care that our subacute units provide and the positive impact they make on our patients.” Congratulations and kudos to these teams!

Congratulations to ScionHealth Chief Medical Officer Dean French, MD, for his inclusion on Becker's Healthcare's list of Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know for 2025. We thank Dr. French for his leadership, including in overseeing the creation and launch last year of ScionHealth’s National Quality Strategy, which established standards and categories of measurement for clinical quality at all our community and specialty hospitals. 

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, our community hospital located in Hartsville, SC, was one of 134 hospitals nationwide to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group as one of the nation’s Top Hospitals, and one of only 36 to earn the consumer health advocate group's Top General Hospital designation. This is the second year in a row that Carolina Pines has earned recognition by Leapfrog as a Top General Hospital, putting it in elite company for exceptional and safe patient care. In today’s announcement from The Leapfrog Group, five ScionHealth community hospitals earned the A grade for patient safety, the highest Leapfrog grade possible and one attained by less than 30% of hospitals nationwide. This represents the most ScionHealth community hospitals to earn A’s in a Leapfrog rating cycle since the company’s inception in 2021. This is a great achievement by our hospitals and their teams, and evidence that our national quality strategy is making a positive impact on patient safety and care. Congratulations to the A-grade recipients Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Logan Regional Medical Center, Southwestern Medical Center LLC, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Inc., and Watertown Regional Medical Center.
