About us
Rush University Medical Center is an academic medical center that includes a 671-bed hospital serving adults and children, the 61-bed Johnston R. Bowman Health Center and Rush University. Rush University is home to one of the first medical colleges in the Midwest and one of the nation's top-ranked nursing colleges, as well as graduate programs in allied health, health systems management and biomedical research. The medical center also offers more than 70 highly selective residency and fellowship programs in medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. For more than 170 years, Rush has been leading the way in developing innovative and often life-saving treatments. Today, Rush is a thriving center for basic and clinical research, with physicians and scientists involved in hundreds of research projects developing and testing the effectiveness and safety of new therapies and medical devices. In addition to its mission in patient care, education and research, Rush maintains a strong commitment to the community. Rush reaches out to the Chicago community through such offerings as the Rush Community Services Initiatives Program, an umbrella for several student-led outreach programs designed to address the social and health care needs of residents in neighboring communities.

As we wrap up Black History Month, I’m reflecting on my WHY. 💡 For as long as I can remember, I’ve known I wanted to be a registered nurse 👨🏿⚕️. There were no nurses in my family, and I can’t quite explain where this dream came from—I just knew I wanted to be in a position to make life better for my family. 11 years ago, I became a nurse, and since then, my dream has not only become a reality, but it has far exceeded what I could have ever imagined. I’ve had the honor of serving my community in roles such as a registered nurse, nursing leader, hospital administrator and HR leader at Rush University Medical Center and a leader in the College of Nursing at Rush University. I don’t take these opportunities lightly. We all have a responsibility to ensure that not only our lives thrive, but the lives of those less privileged, and those who come after us does as well. A perfect example is the work being done through STEAM & Dream Liberation Labs, where young people are being exposed to careers that will transform their lives, their families, and entire communities for generations to come. 🙌🏿 I’m a proud Black male registered nurse💪🏿, and I understand that if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu. So, I ask: What are you doing to elevate your communities? Let’s continue to create opportunities and uplift those around us. The future is in our hands. #BlackHistoryMonth #NursingLeadership #CommunityImpact #STEAM #DreamLiberation

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we pay tribute to Iris Shannon, PhD, RN — a mentor, teacher, friend and advocate for countless faculty and students at Rush. Shannon was a founding faculty member of the College of Nursing and later became an associate professor and chairperson in the Department of Community Health Nursing. Prior to Rush University's creation, she served as assistant chair in the Division of Nursing at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital, a predecessor of Rush. Shannon’s career was rooted in her dedication to the unmet health care needs of the Chicago community. During the 1960s, she worked as a public health nurse at the Mile Square Center on the West Side, one of the first community clinics in the country. She also served on the Chicago Board of Education as chief teacher-nurse in the Head Start program. Shannon's lasting impact at Rush and beyond was recognized in 1996, when she received the Trustee Medal — Rush's highest honor.
