New blog post! 📣 We were recently featured in the San Francisco Examiner where our CEO Sherilyn Adams shared insights on the challenges nonprofits like Larkin Street are facing due to federal grant freezes and local budget cuts. These changes put critical services for youth homelessness—like housing, education, and job training—at risk, threatening the long-term stability of the young people we serve. Learn how you can help support the future of San Francisco’s youth. • The latest data from the Department of Housing & Urban Development paints a stark picture: homelessness has reached its highest level since tracking began in 2007. Over 770,000 individuals experienced homelessness on a single night in January 2024, making an alarming 18% surge from the previous year. Most concerningly, families with children are bearing the heaviest burden of this crisis. The 2024 Point-in-Time (PIT) count also revealed that 405 families in San Francisco were experiencing homelessness, marking a staggering 94% increase since 2022. Alarmingly, 130 of these families are unsheltered, living in vehicles, on streets, or in other places not meant for habitation. These figures are likely an underrepresentation of the true scope of family homelessness, as PIT counts often miss families who are temporarily living with others, staying in motels, or residing in their cars. At Raphael House, we witness these statistics transform into real stories every day, as families come through our doors seeking stability and support. Our commitment to providing comprehensive support has never been more crucial. This data underscores the pressing need for effective policies and community-wide collaboration to address this growing crisis in our city and across the country. • More than two decades ago, Aruna Light first walked through our doors to volunteer with our children’s program. The experiences from that time left a profound and lasting impression on her. “The environment of Raphael House always felt like more than a shelter. It was a place where families could feel safe and supported,” Aruna shared. “What stood out most was the care and thoughtfulness that went into creating opportunities for families, not just for today, but for the future.” That experience sparked a lifelong commitment. Today, through the Mehra Foundation, Aruna and her family continue to generously support Raphael House, helping families move beyond short-term solutions to transform their lives forever. At Raphael House, we don’t just provide temporary relief. We empower families with the tools they need to achieve lasting success, offering job placement, financial literacy training, and personalized guidance from case managers who understand the complex challenges of homelessness. The impact is undeniable. In the past decade, 87% of families in our Residential Shelter have transitioned to stable housing, and 93% have maintained that stability with continued support. “What makes Raphael House truly unique is the ability to create lasting change,” Aruna said. “Knowing that our support helps families achieve this kind of transformation means everything to me.” As 2024 comes to a close, we invite you to join Aruna and countless others in making a real and lasting impact. Your gift will help families find stability and build brighter futures, ensuring we can continue our life-changing work. https://lnkd.in/duwNJ4a
