The decline of pollinators poses a significant threat to biodiversity, but Brazil’s Paraná state is taking action through its Jardins de Mels initiative. In 2023, over 200 hive structures of native stingless bees were installed in public spaces as part of the state’s broader environmental efforts. These bees, including the endangered Guaraipo species, are critical to pollinating 90% of the plant species in the Atlantic Forest, an ecosystem of global importance. As Valdemar Bernardo Jorge, Secretary of State for Sustainable Development, explains, “It is a project that draws the attention of the population to the need to care for the environment.” This initiative not only protects biodiversity but also raises public awareness about the importance of pollinators to sustainable ecosystems. With 70,000 sensors in the field, VIA is helping small farmers boost crop yields, save water, and contribute to global food security.
